Question about Acer TravelMate 2300 Notebook

Startup freezes and laptop won't even switch off in XP

Acer Travelmate 4220, Windows Professional (SP2). Startup proceeds until unput required from mouse to select user. Mouse freezes and power down button won't allow to switch off, even when held down for 5 seconds or more. Have to take battery out to switch off!

Startup in Safe mode is OK, including mouse, and after that computer will start up correctly when reset. However after switching off the problem will re-appear.

I have carried out chkdsk /r and a few bad sectors were repaired, then reinstalled Windows XP from fresh, and new drivers from ACER website. The computer had virus protection (AVG). I tried to use the XP disk to repair the original XP installation but the mouse kept freezing and had to resort to a new installation, but now even with that the problem has returned exactly as before.

Could it be either a BIOS problem or a faulty RAM section? What else is it likely to be?

Thanks for your help

It's not the bios, i doubt it's the ram, very rare to get a virus in the ram. But here is what from your description it "may" be. Even though you formatted the drive prior to reinstalling windows, the virus, "if that's what it was" can still be there unless you do an Fdsk, that will clear everyting from the drive. If it was a nasty virus it very well can still be there. You can google this and see that what I am telling you is quite common, formatting does not kill viruises, i copied the following for you to better explain what fdsk does,
Most effective anti-virus products will be able to remove a virus from
a partition sector, but some have difficulties under certain
circumstances. In these cases the user may decide to use FDISK /MBR.

Unless you know precisely what you are doing this is unwise. You may
lose access to the data on your hard disk if the infection was done by
a virus such as Monkey or OneHalf. Part 4, section 14 of this FAQ
contains details as to how losing data might happen.

(v) Won't formatting the hard disk help?
------------------------------------

Not necessarily. Formatting the hard disk can result in everything
being wiped from the drive *apart* from the virus. Format alters the
DOS partition, but leaves the partition sector (AKA the MBR) untouched.
There is usually a better way of removing a virus infection than
formatting the hard disk.
I hope this helps you

I had a virus problem in a brand new acer laptop, and it was very hard to get out, I ended up it in safe mode and running adware pro, and avg pro, to get it out. You can get a trial version for the adware on the adware pro website. I read about some of the new variants earlier the day this happened, it just happened to be a dear friends laptop, so I felt responsible because I installed the OS and Software, but it couldn't have been more than a few minutes from the time I installed the OS to the time it picked up the virus. So if you don't want to re-install the OS, try running the virus program in safe mode. I saw from the post thst you were functioning ok in safe mode. Try it.

My suggestion will be a little hard work for u:

1. you already format and install the driver, in safemood its ok, so try not to install touchpad and quicklunch driver after formating.

2. Second option is try to format with other xp cd, maybe your cd is corrupted.

3.Hardware faulty is the hard one to diagnose, if you think the ram, the only way to test it is by replace it with other ram but i know it is not practical similar to hard disk. The only thing i know if it work in safemode mean two things - either your xp cd is uneffective/broken when install there will be missing file or some driver just not get along with your version of xp.

So.
1.try not to install touchpad.
2.if still the same, try to format with other xp cd.
3.maybe you can update bios but i'm just think it is not the problem: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/tm_4220.html

Try to update BIOS .

It cant be faulty RAM section . It is only due to BIOS set up . You need to configure the BIOS properly .

use can use memtest to test your ram
    http://www.memtest.org/

available on the above, page you will need to download and burn the cd image to a cd. with iso burner available on this page
    http://www.ntfs.com/iso-burning.htm

See if the problem is with the ram, the issue may also be overheating, try canned air on the ventalation ports with the laptop turned off to get the dust out.

I have a frozen acer travelmate netbook that had frozen drive d and c. whenever i open my laptop, it freezes after displaying windows xp. i tried using ctrl+alt+del / ctrl+alt+shift / ctrl+shift+esc but...

sounds lile your Windows operating system or hard drive has become corrupted or damaged. Try to repair Windows or reinstall it using an external optical drive and your Windows CD or restore/recovery CD. If might also be necessary to fully reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows. If that still fails, it might indicate a failing hard drive

Acer travelmate 3210

Acer Travelmate 3210 is the Series
and in that series your Laptop model is 3212NWXMI

like Acer Aspire 5300 is series and 5320 is the model number like that.

there was no need to update Bios
now in case your laptop is turning on
Please try to start in the Safe mode
and there you shut down your laptop properly and try Restarting in normal mode.
Secondly, If you are well versed with the technology then please
try to reinstall the Windows Xp

and BIOS update is something you should be very careful of.
do not try unless it is MOST required
