Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

DIR 615 affecting playback of music files on Windows XP

It seems that since installing my D-Link Wireless Router with DIR 615 USB that my music files are choppy, frequently pausing, skipping etc...I have run my XP checkdisk utility and have thoroughly defragged my hard drive. I deleted many files, thinking that maybe I had too many songs, but this is not the issue. Something is interferring with the playback. I see there is a firmware update for my version (Version:B2). Could this be a factor? The wireless seems fine in all other respects, so I'm a little hestitant in updating firmware unless it's absolutely necessary. I

I am using primarily Real Player, but I've tried playing same files in Windows Media Player, I've just realized that there is skipping issues with You Tube as well.

  • kevin_angusm Jan 28, 2009

    It is a wireless system.

  • kevin_angusm Jan 28, 2009

    Intel Pentium 4 2.66 GHz
    480 MB RAM
    112 Gig Hard drive (45.3 G free)
Yes, I have defragged the hard drive
I have just attempted to upgrade firmware - received the following message after following all instructions:

The uploaded firmware file may not be correct.
You may have uploaded a file that is not intended for
this device, or the uploaded file may be corrupted.

If the uploaded file is correct, it is possible that
the device may be too busy to properly receive it right now.
In this case, please try the upload again. It is also possible that
you are logged in as a 'user' instead of an 'admin' - only administrators
    can upload new firmware.

The Gateway will not be reprogrammed.

    Version B2

  • kevin_angusm Jan 29, 2009

Yes, it is on the wired computer that I am trying to upgrade the firmware. It is not WRT54G but the DIR 615 (which was not amongst the choices).

  • kevin_angusm Jan 29, 2009

My firmware is up to date. All issues remain. Used to be able to consistently connect at 300 Mbps - now it's only between 45 / 54 Mbps. It's a mystery to me.

  • kevin_angusm Jan 29, 2009

Typically Firefox and Word - I have just updated the Network Magic software that came with the D Link DIR 615 wireless.

  • kevin_angusm Jan 29, 2009

DSL Connection - ran the connection test, which recognized the DSL as appropriate. My ISP is Vianet. Am updating drivers for my DWA 130 D Link USB Adaptor as well as my Realtek AC'97 soundcard, to see if this helps. This has happened before, but for whatever reason it did go away for a while, which is why I am havving difficulty nailing down the precise problem. Via Device Manager, I looked for anything that was conflicting, but nothing. Hum...maybe it has something to do with the Da Vinci Code.

  • kevin_angusm Jan 29, 2009

No. D Link Wireless DWA 130. I'm thinking that this all may a RAM issue - 512 MB simply may no longer be sufficient.

    Thanks for the input

If you have a WRT54G router the version should be 8.2. Is that the correct model number and version?

You have to be on a wired connection to upgrade your router. Wirelss connections will not be allowed for firmware upgrades to your router.

DIR 615 is a D-link product. Not a Linksys product. Did you go to the correct website?

What programs are running on your computer while you are using the service?

  • Tim Babcock
    Tim Babcock Jan 29, 2009

I have had that problem happen with real player in the past. Usually Real Player uses some additional memory resources to get it to work. Are you using a DSL or Cable connection? Who is your provider?

Is this a wireless G adaptor?

  • Tim Babcock
    Tim Babcock Jan 30, 2009

If you are on a wireless G you will only get about 54 mbs. You will get a faster rate on wired. Usually 100mbs. If you have 512mb and you have all of your Windows XP service packs in the computer installed, then it is a memory problem for sure. Service pack 2 robs the memory with the firewall and the Windows security software. If you put 1gb of RAM into it, it would make a big difference.

I am connected to a DIR 615, it says I have wireless connection but it won't connect wireless, if I connect a cable it is fine??

Hi mike63771,

All you need to do is to set it up properly. Make sure that the router is connected to the computer using an ethernet cable so that the computer will be able to communicate with the router. Then open a browser type 192.168.0.1 on the address bar. The default username is admin and the password is blank. Go to the Wireless Settings Page then check the SSID or Network Name and the Network Key or Passphrase. Now try to connect to your computer. Click on Start then click on Connect To. Select your Network Name then if it ask you to enter a password enter the Network Key. You can personalize the network key on the router settings page.

Rate me if this helps so i can help other.

Hi,

It seems that you are using usb connection to install your router. This error happens, to some, due to incompatibility issues. I suggest for you to set your wireless network by way of general steps and common cable connections. Let's put it, the old ways. This are the general steps for all types of routers.

Click the link below for proper cable connections in setting up your wireless network.

This link also provides somewhat a checklist on what you need for wireless connectivity

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/wireless.mspx

Then, configure your wireless connection. The following links provides the step by step instructions for each version of Windows:

Windows XP. http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/wlan_client_configure.mspx?mfr=true

Windows Vista. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Setting-up-a-wireless-network

Windows 7. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Setting-up-a-wireless-network

I hope this works for you. Kindly reply for further assistance. Good Luck!

Is there an update for this wireless router? I purchased it last March. I am having trouble with my Ipad and the Apple technician wants me to make sure I have the latest driver.

Check the D-Link.com website for the latest firmware updates and driver updates for your Apple computer.

I've found that D-link offers frequent updates to the firmware, for instance, which may affect the performance of the router with your Apple product.

Good luck on updating your D-link DIR-615.

I have DI-604 in line between Windows Vista computer and cable modem. Works fine. Bought DIR-615 (wireless). Several places instructions say, ""Insert the DIR-615 CD into computer and click Install Router....

Contrary to the many warnings not to install the router before starting the installation with the CD, I got the installation to complete only AFTER I installed the router inline thusly:

1. Power everything off.
2. Remove DI-604.
2. Install and connect 615 router to computer and to modem.
3. Apply power to router and modem.
4. Apply power to computer and wait until Windows loads.
5. Insert 615 installation CD.
6. Follow the directions.
