Try this : See if you can find your motherboard model number. If so, type it into Google, go to the manufacturers site and download a manual which should have the wiring diagram you require.
Cheers.

Headphone jack is broken INSIDE the port and is overriding the speakers. Can I override this override?

Or instead of having to open up your computer and messing with the mobo. Just use the control panel in to disable the headphone jack.

My son tried to put a usb lead into my pc the wrong way and he bent all copper pins inside is it easy and cheap to repair or could i connect the tower to my laptop???? theres a hard one for you teckno

No, it isn't hard.

Wrapping your mind around Quantum Mechanics, and String Line theory, is a little tough; though. lol!

Will make sense in a moment.

The front of your computer is the Front Panel.
Those are Front Panel USB ports.

On the motherboard are USB headers.
Small rectangular shaped pieces of plastic, that have contact pins sticking up.

EACH USB header will support TWO USB ports in the Front Panel.

Therefore; there will be two cables coming from two USB ports, in the Front Panel; and connect to ONE USB header on the motherboard.

IF, you feel the contact pins in the USB ports in the Front Panel, may be Touching each other; I strongly advise disconnecting the cables TO them.

Disconnect from motherboard.

Why?
Because if they touch each other, it will short the USB header out; on the motherboard.
This = No.

Then just use the USB ports on the back of the computer.

!O_O!

This is to save money, Mark; and save your computer.

Going further; If there are enough funds available, then I suggest replacing the Front Panel I/O/USB/Audio Control Panel Board,

Connect desktop to laptop to do what?
For USB port availability? IMHO that is like shooting yourself in the foot.

Also, how do you propose to accomplish this?

The USB ports in the Front Panel, are for ease of accessibility.
(As the young tyke has found, lol!)

Connecting a laptop greatly detracts from this.
Jus sayin'.

Building computer from scratch need to know where cords connect

Not a problem hicksdusty3

Post the motherboard manufacturer name, and model number.

In the meantime here is a Generic guide, (Which I despise posting),

Power cables;

http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html

IDE (PATA) data cable information,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_ATA

SATA data cable information,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SATA_ports.jpg

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SATA_Data_Cable.jpg

The plastic front of your computer is the Front Panel.

The area of contact pins on the motherboard, that the Main wires from the Front Panel go to, is the Front Panel header.
Known by many names, and abbreviations.

I CANNOT give you the Front Panel pinout, without knowing what Exact motherboard we are dealing with here.

Can't tell you where to attach what cable to where, on the motherboard, or any peripherals.
(Harddrive/Optical Drive {CD/DVD drive)

I also need to know if the Harddrive is an IDE (PATA) unit, or a SATA unit.
Same with the optical drive/s.

Post back in a Comment.

Front power switch broken. Bezel won't come off easily. Thought we could just get a switch and install on the back but don't know which of the colored pairs of wires go to the original switch in the...

I would suggest this generic Power On switch,

1) http://www.directron.com/atxswitch.html,

and the Red, and Black twisted pair of wires go to the Power On switch.

Your statement of ,"....don't know which of the colored pairs of wires go.....", leads me to believe you may have all of the Front Panel wires disconnected.

How about information as to where ALL the Front Panel wires go?
(Provided I have correctly interpreted your statement)

Back in the time that the eMachines T2542 was made, TriGem was the motherboard manufacturer.

The Model Name of the motherboard is Imperial, and the Model Number of the motherboard, could have been one of four variations offered.

Model Name: Imperial
Model numbers could be G, GL, GV, or GLVE
(Imperial G, Imperial GL, Imperial GV, or Imperial GLVE)

ALL four variations used the same Front Panel header.
(The connector on the motherboard the Front Panel wires connect to, is named the Front Panel header)

I would like you to view this page,

http://www.e4allupgraders.info/dir1/ecase/support/front_panel_header_support.shtml

Scroll down to the heading -
Trigem Imperial Front Panel Header Pinout.

A) Pins 1, 2, and 3 are for the Power On LED light.

B) Pins 5 and 6 are for the HarDDrive activity LED light.
(Pin 4 is not used. NC. No Connection)

C) Pins 7 and 8 are for the Power On switch

D) I wouldn't connect any wires to Pins 9 and 10, nor Pins 11 and 12

E) Pins 14 and 15 are for the Reset switch. (The button you press to restart your computer.
If the T2542 doesn't have a Reset switch, don't worry about it. There are many other ways to restart your computer)

F) Pins 17 18, and 20 are for an internal speaker.
This speaker is used for BIOS Beep Codes.

In the chart to the right, you will see GRD used many times.
GRD stands for Ground.
ANY Black wire in the twisted pair of wires, is a Ground wire.

Most of the eMachines I have worked on, use a Red, and Black pair of twisted wires for the Power On switch.
I could be mistaken on the T2542.

Best method, is to follow the color code of the wires that come from Pins 7 and 8, and be sure.

Pulled off front cover. three sets of wires came off. need to know where to reconnect. white/red wire HDD LED, white/green wire POWER LED, white/black wire POWER SW

Hi. You may want to check your motherboard for this wires to connect to, First, check your motherboards manual and look where the FRONT PANEL is located, then on the front panel or in the manual itself it will tell you where are those wires should be connected to. If you dont have the manual for your motherboard search it on google and do the same, and if still you coudnt find it over the internet then just look closely on your motherboard and look for the words HDD LED, POWER LED and POWER SW, usually those words or the FRONT PANEL is located on the left side bottom part of your motherboard. Hope This Helps

I am about to switch out the motherboard for m5640 aspire 1

New motherboard will have a picture of the pin connections and where they connect on the motherboard. Just follow these connections, also the wires leading from the from the front of the case to the motherboard are labelled as to what they connect to. As a final note, the white wire on the connectors is usually always the ground wire, so look at the drawing carefully to see which side is the positive and make sure that the coloured wire goes to the positive side not the white.
AS ALWAYS INFORMATION IS FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPPOSES ONLY AND WHAT YOU DO WITH IT IS UP TO YOU.

How do hook up front panel power switch to motherboard

The simple way is to remove the front panel of the computer trace the wires to the front panel leds, make note of color pair to each led. The using the manual that came with the motherboard locate the schematic for the JFP1 connector on the motherboard, it show's where the leds wires connect to operate. If you have no manual, if you look very closely at the connector you will see where the led wires connect, you may have to use a magnifiying glass and flash light. You cannot damage anything if you accidently place the led wires in the wrong place. If the panel led wires are in a single connector and won't work on the motherboard, you can remove the wires from the connector by using a very small sharp pointed pick to push down the retaining tab on each wire, thus enabling it to be removed from the connector, just be patient.
