Question about GE JEB1095 Convection/Microwave Oven

Burning Smell in microwave/convection oven

I put vegetables in the microwave oven and the noise from the microwave/convection oven sounded much louder than usual and there was a burning smell when I opened the door. Of course I immediately stopped and I am wondering if it's something that can be repaired. New models cost over a thousand dollars and I love this oven!
It is a GE JEB1095 Profile Performance microwave/convection oven
The light operates and it still runs, but since I am worried that it is the motor, I will not use it.
Thank you so much!

Assuming your inside light and turntable come on when you try to microwave, with the symptoms you have, I would most strongly suspect a shorted high voltage rectifier diode or a bad magnetron, or a loose and possibly corroded connection on the magnetron's terminal.

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

GE Customer Service is here.

Otherwise, the diode is a fairly cheap fix, and the mag will cost more.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

(if it's not shorted or burned, it's probably okay)

7 yr old unit emitting burning smell. Everything still works. Is it worth trying to get repaired or just buy a new one.

is the burning smell just when you use the convection oven or when you use the microwave , reason I ask is that if its only coming from the convection oven then chances are you have something melted on the heat elements , this can be cleaned off with a dry brillo pad

Microwave smell like burning rubber

Good Afternoon Friend,

I understand that you are receiving a burning rubber smell from your Frigidaire microwave. I also see that your appliance will run for a couple of seconds, and then you hear a weird noise, followed by a burning rubber smell. I suggest contacting your local authorized technician, especially when dealing with your microwave. They will be able to diagnose your appliance and determine what is causing that sound as well as the burning rubber smell. Hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-

Sharp R-1510 1000 watts microwave, not heating

Sounds like the inverter (power supply for cooking) or the magnatron which does the work----neither are cheap parts.

Does not heat, hot or burning wire/plastic smell. Louder noise than noise than normal.

Sounds like you have a bad magnetron. Not much worth replacing in these over-the-range microwaves except the fuse. Repair will cost as much as a new one and the high voltage circuit of a m/w is not somewhere I would recommend a DIYer to mess around in.

don;t worry;

if the is a convection model then the covection coill will smell that way if there is a geese build up and should be ok to use. however you should only smell that if you are using the convection mode.

Louder than normal noise when using and bad 'burning' smell

You need to stop using your microwave if it's burning. This is a common symptom of a blown magnetron. Using it in it's current condition is not only dangerous, but it will further damage other components in the high voltage circuit and/or waveguide. In many circumstances, damaging the waveguide renders a microwave non-repairable. A new magnetron will cost you around $100 if you wish to repair this yourself. NOTE: I would not recommend working in or around the high voltage circuitry unless you absolutely know what you are doing. Do not attempt to take any live voltage measurements or operate the oven with any of the protective covers removed or interlocks defeated. Voltage potentials of over 13,000 volts exist and are potentially dangerous. I hope this helps you.
