Exterior front door handle of 95 Cadillac Deville broke off on one side, is there a way to repair it?
The handle is bolted (?) on two sides, one side broke off in cold weather. I would like to avoid the high repair costs I would have bringing it to the dealer.
Re: exterior front door handle of 95 Cadillac Deville...
You realy need to put a new one they are not expensive go to a salvagr ride on the installation take the front panel of unhook the door actuator handle two nuts on the inside hold the door handle simple project.
Thank you Hugo, but could you break it down a little more for me? I understand I need to go to a salvage yard to buy a replecment handle. What do I take the front panel off of, the interior of the door? And, well, how on earth do I do that? Also, what is a door actuator? there is a metal rod that hooks to the handle inside a rubber gromet holds that rod auto zone or orilleys got a little tool that is called trim panel remover take the front handle off it is usally a phillips screw and take the door master switch off is usally two mome screws and put aside you should be able to see evry thing.there is a metal rod that hooks to the handle inside a rubber gromet holds that rod auto zone or orilleys got a little tool that is called trim panel remover take the front handle off it is usally a phillips screw and take the door master switch off is usally two mome screws and put aside you should be able to see evry thing.

Usually a couple screws at the door handle and plastic clips along the sides and bottom. I strongly suggest getting the tool for the clips. It's cheap and you don't want to break the clips. Once the panel is free from the door it slides up and off.
our question is vague. If you must replace the exterior handle only, Point 7 in Prakash's excellent answer is enough. Tip: to repair a broken exterior handle: fill both sides of the broken handle with metal reinforced epoxy like KwikWeld, then push nails (heads clipped off, 4 or 5 cm long, 1.5 or 2 mm diameter) into the small part (over half the length of the nails will stick out), then put the handle back together and wait. The nails will reinforce the epoxy and you'll have several cm of metal totally filling up the handle where it is broken.
There is always some way to get to the screws. So if they are not obvious you need to look for circles that can pop off with a screw driver or hidden places like under the handle or in the side pocket or even the outter edge when you open the door.
Remove the power window switch module - use a 1/2" wide flat bladed tool to pry up on the rear edge. Then CAREFULLY push in to disengage the clip and pull up. Disconnect the electrical. Remove the trim panel - there are two screws under the the covers at the ends of the door handle, and one behind the inside opener handle cover. BE VERY CAREFULL not to damage these covers. Gently release the retainer tabs located all around the door panel, and lift up to remove..
You'll need to remove screws that are by the door handle,
arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the
panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want
to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to
get it off the window ledge. If needed, you can pull back the weather
seal
(can't reuse it, but it's not that important) and you will be able to
access everything inside the door
.
Power Door Lock Operation (Front Doors)
The front doors do not have traditional door lock actuators. They have electronically controlled door latches that will operate depending on the status of the door lock system. This status is determined by the front door modules and the last known state of the lock system. If the last known state is LOCK, the latches will not release when the door handles are operated. If the last known state is UNLOCK, the latches will release when the door handles are operated. The front doors are also equipped with red door lock status indicators. The front door modules will supply power and ground to the indicators to illuminate them when the lock system is in a virtual state of lock. The indicators will not continuously illuminate when the vehicle is locked. They will illuminate for approximately 5 seconds after a lock switch activation or after a door handle has been operated and the front door modules are in a virtual state of lock. For further information on the front door latches, refer to Power Door Latch Description and Operation .
I would assume they check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes ?
DTC B3062 Front Door Key Lock Switch Circuit
• DTC B3067 Front Door Key Unlock Switch Circuit
DTC B3849 Exterior Door Handle Switch Circuit
The left front exterior door handle and right front exterior door handle switch signal circuits provide inputs to the driver door module (DDM) and passenger door module (PDM) when an exterior door handle switch is activated. These inputs allow the door module to detect a door open request. The door modules provide voltage to the door handle switches. If the door module detects that a ground is applied for greater than 30 seconds continuously, a DTC is set and the door module will ignore the door handle switch input.

Ford had a problem with the door handles not working properly. They are cheap plastic. If the exterior door handle is broken, you will need to drill out the rivets that hold it in, and then get the door open and the panel off. You have to disconnect the rod going to it. Then, remove the handle. If you don't want to drill again, I suggest replacing the rivets with a bolt and nut easily obtainable at your hardware store. I've found that a M7 bolt works very well. If you are having a problem with the interior door handle, it's the same problem. Remember to check your door latch because if your exterior handle is broken, then your latch isn't working properly. I got one at Ford for about 40 bucks.
