Check the cpu fan, or clean out the heatsink, check all the fans including the one in the power supply.

How do I unlock the bios on a Gateway notebook?

To rest to factory defaults. Remove the power supply and battery, push and hold the start button for 5 seconds to discharge the caps. Then remove the ram chips, and the button battery. Wait a few minutes, replace ram, replace the battery and start it up.

Try this fix:-

This problem was on a Gateway NV52 running Vista Home Premium (64) and this is how it was resolved, with the help of their tech support:

1. Turn off computer and unplug power cord.

2. Disconnect all external devices

3. remove battery

4. press power button and hold for 10-15 seconds

5. plug power cord back into computer and press power button.

6. Check LED's and listen for power supply fan.

7. If LED's are on or power supply fan starts spinning, watch for boot screen

8. If computer begins to turn on, turn it off.

9. Reconnect battery and external devices.

10. Press power button and make sure computer starts.

HP 2000-410US when turned on the power light button blinks 1 time every 5 seconds, nothing elas

1. Disconnect anything that is connected to your laptop. Usb Flash discs, External HDDs, Wireless Devices using dongles etc.
2. Make sure that your device does not receive any power i.e. Disconnect your ac cable, and remove battery from your laptop.
3. Hold down the power button for 5 seconds. This would drain remaining power from your laptop. But as the power cable and the battery are disconnected, you should not expect anything to happen.
4. Identify where your RAM is located under your laptop. Unscrew the cover off, then remove the RAM from your laptop. Replace the cover temporarily.
5. Flip over your laptop. Connect your power cable to the laptop, NOT THE BATTERY NEH! Then press the power button. Sometimes your laptop will make long beeps to let you know the RAM is not inserted in your laptop. But nothing will happen on your monitor because it needs RAM to show you something.
6. After those beeps, remove the power cable. Press the Power Button to drain remaining power on your laptop. Flip the Laptop and replace the RAM you have removed earlier.
7. Insert your power cable and try restarting your laptop and see what happens. I am sure by now you should have some response on your laptop monitor.

NB: While performing the above mentioned, remember PC or Laptop parts are delicate. Even static electricity can damage them. Thus before handling your laptop components, make sure you touch the wall or any large metal subject from time to time to discharge the static. Wear 100% cotton cloths as you are working on it. Bare feet even better to discharge the static

What is the life expectancy of a hp desktop

Good question. Depends on how it was taken care of, and if there were any low quality parts installed, from the factory.

(The Power Supply's are! Generic units that are low quality from HiPro, Bestec, or Delta)

If Electrolytic Capacitors are used on the motherboard, (Radial Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor), they are the weakest point.
That is why Solid Polymer capacitors are used more, and more, now. (Was solid Tantalum capacitors, then Polymer)

http://capacitorlab.com/visible-failures/index.htm

The two main reasons for Desktop PC failure in general, are;
1) Computer is dirty inside.

I have a shop FULL of these.
Sure, I'll clean them, and maybe install a new Power Supply if needed. Thanks for giving them to me!

2) Computer Power Supply failure.

Rate HP to Dell to Acer to eMachines to Lenovo (IBM) to whatever?

Acer and eMachines are Budget computers. Get what you pay for.
Power Supply's, and capacitors on the motherboard, are the main problems.

Gateway wasn't, but is owned by Acer now; so who knows?

HP is only budget because of the Power Supply's. Replace with a decent one, and continue on for a long time.

I have a working eMachines T1090 from 2001. Just replaced the Power Supply, cleaned inside, and good to go.
(FOLLOW Anti-Static Precautions!)

I'm using an old Gateway 7200X right now. Just changed the graphics card, and cleaned. It is from 2004.

Have several HP's in the shop from 2003 to 2005, that still kick boot-ty.

Is there an HP desktop computer problem I can help you with?

Computer will not power up. The psu fan kicks on for split second and then nothing.

unplug everything from the motherboard, including the hdd, ram, and any PCI cards. Connect only the main power for the board and power up the system.
More than likely it will boot 'naked'
now begin the tedious process of troubleshooting by turning off the system, replacing a SINGLE component (if more than 1 stick of ram you may insert them together, but may need to remove one to isolate the culprit if they are the reason for the short)
once the system fails to boot you can replace everything except that component and you can go about your marry way of purchasing a replacement.
If the system failed to boot 'naked' then respond with your computer model, and any model numbers on the motherboard, including any product stamps
GOOD LUCK AND PLS RATE THIS POST!!!!!!!

Power button blinking red on gateway profile 4...monitor appears to be on, fan is operating, can hear drive starting but computer will not boot up. Checked power to hard drive and ribbon cables, memory,...

1.Check your power supply by using an Analog Volt Meter, you should check if the power supplied by your power supply is stable,

2.Check your ram if it is faulty. try to clean the lids of the ram using an eraser. If still your computer doesnt work, you should find a spare RAM and test if your RAM is working properly.

3.If you dont have any problems with your RAM, you should try unplugging external PCI cards, AGP Cards, on your motherboard and use the internal devices instead, like built in VGA, sound card, Network Interface Card, just to check if there are no faulty devices which stopped your computer from starting.

Hope this will helped you out mate :)

The small fan does not want to run, it runs for a few seconds and stops, my computer keeps rebooting

when the fan stops 2 things are happening 1 the bios sences no rpm speed from the fan or the processor heats up to quickly and the safety in the bios will shut it down. try moving the fan connector to the case fan connector then go into the bios and change the fan settings. this is only a temp fix the fan stopping tells me that the onboard cpu fan regulator is going out and this is a precurser to more problems to the board going out. also just to be certin check the power supply 4 years ago i came across this in a gateway it was weird.
