Check the cpu fan, or clean out the heatsink, check all the fans including the one in the power supply.

What is the life expectancy of a hp desktop

Good question. Depends on how it was taken care of, and if there were any low quality parts installed, from the factory.

(The Power Supply's are! Generic units that are low quality from HiPro, Bestec, or Delta)

If Electrolytic Capacitors are used on the motherboard, (Radial Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor), they are the weakest point.
That is why Solid Polymer capacitors are used more, and more, now. (Was solid Tantalum capacitors, then Polymer)

http://capacitorlab.com/visible-failures/index.htm

The two main reasons for Desktop PC failure in general, are;
1) Computer is dirty inside.

I have a shop FULL of these.
Sure, I'll clean them, and maybe install a new Power Supply if needed. Thanks for giving them to me!

2) Computer Power Supply failure.

Rate HP to Dell to Acer to eMachines to Lenovo (IBM) to whatever?

Acer and eMachines are Budget computers. Get what you pay for.
Power Supply's, and capacitors on the motherboard, are the main problems.

Gateway wasn't, but is owned by Acer now; so who knows?

HP is only budget because of the Power Supply's. Replace with a decent one, and continue on for a long time.

I have a working eMachines T1090 from 2001. Just replaced the Power Supply, cleaned inside, and good to go.
(FOLLOW Anti-Static Precautions!)

I'm using an old Gateway 7200X right now. Just changed the graphics card, and cleaned. It is from 2004.

Have several HP's in the shop from 2003 to 2005, that still kick boot-ty.

Is there an HP desktop computer problem I can help you with?

I have a Gateway 310 XL H desk top PC. After the storm, Isaac, It won't power on. The red and green lights come on, the red goes off after a short time. The monitor flashes a manfacture logo then

The system is powered up if green light on, the hard disk is powered up if red-light on for a few seconds then goes off, but I assume it's not loading up after that. You have no output to video.

Try holding f2 or f4 to load default bios when turning on. If that doesnt work then That would point to me that there is a problem with either:

1) processor burnt out, or needs refitting following a knock to the case causing a bad connection.

2) ram burnt out or not correctly installed. Try refitting the ram or using a different combination of ram.

3. Bios chip burnt out. Sometimes you can literally see the chip is slightly melted.

4. Other motherboard fault, look for melted chip or damaged component.

5. Psu faulty or not connected properly. Check connections, or bench test with another psu.

Have you moved the pc recently? Sometimes dust builds up under processor or along ram, and when moving pc giving it a slight knock can cause bad connection. If dusty, remove clean and re install.

Hope it helps.

Gateway 710 6500844 300w power supply replacement

most power supply units will fit you can get a larger wattage output eg: heavy duty if you have added any more devices to your computer more RAM,a larger hard drive, more cd/dvd drives these added will put a greater need for wattage output on the PSU

you should check all the electrical connections before you make a decision and make sure they are the same as as the ones that you will need to run your computer also
check the measurements inside the frame to make absolutely sure it will fit

hope this helps

Hey, i have a gateway gm 5472. when i try to boot the computer up, firstly, i have no video or sound, the led power light does not come on, but the fams run. I have a MCP61PM-AM motherboard in it with Amd...

Hi,

I would have suspected that your RAM needs to be removed, cleaned & then replaced which more often than not sorts out the problem you have described.
But since you mention the power LED not working, I suspect that you have a faulty power supply.
Try connecting a power supply from another working PC to see if this solves the problem.
If so, power supplies are relatively inexpensive & shouldn't set you back more than $20-$30 for a descent unit.

Best wishes,

Gateway 420gr bios config for a pci express card

Try changing another setting in the BIOS when you change to autodetect. If that setting changes also, consider replacing the CMOS battery.
Also, check your PSU rating against the GPU's requirements. The card may not be drawing enough power to start and the MB defaults to the video that is running. You may need to replace the PSU with a higher wattage (and better quality), especially if it's the original power supply unit that came with the PC. What you will need will depend on the card and everything in the case. Google PSU calculator to see what you need.

Power button blinking red on gateway profile 4...monitor appears to be on, fan is operating, can hear drive starting but computer will not boot up. Checked power to hard drive and ribbon cables, memory,...

1.Check your power supply by using an Analog Volt Meter, you should check if the power supplied by your power supply is stable,

2.Check your ram if it is faulty. try to clean the lids of the ram using an eraser. If still your computer doesnt work, you should find a spare RAM and test if your RAM is working properly.

3.If you dont have any problems with your RAM, you should try unplugging external PCI cards, AGP Cards, on your motherboard and use the internal devices instead, like built in VGA, sound card, Network Interface Card, just to check if there are no faulty devices which stopped your computer from starting.

Hope this will helped you out mate :)

System wont turn on and there is a solid green light at the top of the mother board of my gateway 310 pc replaced batt on motherboard and it still wont turn on.

hello, this be caused by several things , i am assuming your are okay with opening up a PC since you have already changed the onboard battery.

here are few things you can try to further troubleshoot:
1: though the ligh on motherboard is on, power supply can still be faulty, so lets test that with a paper clip trick,
follow this link there are pictures and very clear instructions: http://www.ehow.com/how_4732521_test-desktop-power-supply.html
if power supply is bad, well then you know what to do... change it.
if the power supply is good:
2: remove all the RAM (memory) chips from motherboard and plug the power cable back in and observe the response (you may or maynot hear THREE beeps) now plug in memory chip and try powering up and try with one chip at a time...if PC boots up with any of the chips in it you knkow you have a faulty memory.
if that didn't work:
3: with everthing put back together try disconnecting just the hard drive and power it to see if you see BIOS screen.
if not:
4: many time this worked for me with Gateway PCs, reseating CPU in its slot but only do it you feel confident doing it because you can end up with a GIANT door stop if any of the pins on the CPU are/is damaged.
you would need some thermal-paste to go back on between CPU and heatsink.
if that didn't work..i think you are up to buying new PC.

let me know if you need more help or not clear about anything...
good luck
