Dell 5100 won't come up after memory swap

Hi, folks,

I opened up my Dimension 5100 last night, vacuum the dirt and replaced the 512MB DIMMs with working 1024MB DIMMs just unplugged from another machine.

However, when I put everything back together again, it won't come up.

Green light on motherboard is on, no light on front panel at all. Pushing the power button got no reaction at all.

I tried to remove the 1024MB DIMMs and put back the 512MB DIMMs, there's still nothing. Green light on motherboard is on but that's it. Power button has no light, none of the 4 lights on front panel is on too.

All cabling are securely tightened, memory has been reseated multiple times.

Did I just fry something or is the power supply dead just out of bad luck?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Thanks a lot for your replies, folks.

I've powered the computer off and disconnected all external cables before I opened it up, vacuum cleaning was carefully done. Also, I've reseated the original DIMMs but there's no luck.

I'll try change the PSU and see what happens.

Re-check your "pwr, pwr sw, rst, and hdd" connections to the motherboard, they may have been accidentally pulled off.

Replacing the power supply probably won't help, but if you have another one around, go ahead. Unfortunately, like the other poster said, it looks like you may have zapped the motherboard :-(. It doesn't take much static electricity to zap a board or the memory sticks, especially if you are in a cool, dry climate.

You may want to try to clean the memory slots and sticks with rubbing alcohol.

You may want to pull all the power connections and re-seat them. Sometimes just taking a computer apart and putting it back together fixes things. It doesn't take much to make electronics to stop working. Don't use a lot of force either when pulling and replacing the cables. Good luck.

Did you make sure that the power supply was off and or discontected from power source before opening the case?

It is possible that you have fried something by having a static discharge either from you hands or the vacume cleaner hose. Have you checked the correct installation of the memory make sure you are putting the original memory in dimm1 and dimm2.

Also check that the power button is still connected to the mother board just follow the wire from the back of the button just to be sure. Also check that the power switch on th power supply is on.

Hi, I have a dell dimension 5100. I inserted a 1gb ram but it was the wrong one. I took it out and replaced it with the old ones. Now the computer doesn't boot properly - turns on but doesn't load...

Remove all the memories and insert them again, make sure you insert them in the proper way as the slot is keyed.
Memory issues can be identified by the beep sounds.
If you have more than one memory, remove one and insert only one of them and try to boot.
Hope this will help.

New ram memory on dell dimension celeron trying to

You should check with the folks at Dell since whoever wrote their technical manuals for this machine can't do basic math. There are 2 memory slots and each can handle a maximum capacity of 512MB, yet they claim the maximum capacity for the machine is 2GB instead of 1GB. Using 512MB modules would probably work.

Total newbie here - how do I add more memory to my DELL Dimension 2300? I have my cpu open and i am replacing my fan also.

Well your Dell 2300 has a total max. memory of 1 GB from both slot.
If you already have (2) 512MB RAM in the slot then thats the max it can handle.

Dell 2300 only has 2 memory slots. Memory comes in 1- 128MB, 256MB and 512MB PC-133 DIMM modules. So if you want to max it out get (2) 512 MB PC-133 DIMM.

Note:

You must wear a static strap or ground yourself first on the computer chassis before you touch any thing inside your computer
to discharge any static electricity

Dell Dimension 5100 power up problem

I had same issue with dimension 5100 Desktop. I work at Circuit City as the Lead Technician. I found that swapping the power supply did fix the problem! When i initially tested the power supply with a standard power supply tester, the power supply appeared normal. But after swapping the PC works great. Thx for the good idea!

PNY memory

Hi

Dell Dimension 5150 supports DDR2 400MHz (PC2-3200) and DDR2 533MHz (PC2-4300) unbuffered SDRAM Memory (DIMM). You may install a total of four DIMMs in capacities of 256MB, 512MB, or 1GB. The maximum memory supported is 4GB.

From your query, I think the obvious question is; What is specification of the PNY DIMM and/or does the PNY DIMM meet the requirements for Dimension 5150?

Check for memory configuration and installation procedures for Dimension 5150 - http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim5150/en/sm/parts1.htm#wp1364711

The Chipset used on Dimension 5150 is Intel 945G Express. I am not aware of specific compatibility issues regarding the Intel 945G and PNY Memory modules. However, there may really be known issues that I am not aware of.

To proceed, ensure that the PNY Memory is compatible with Dimension 5150. If not, install compatible (memory type, speed, capacity) DIMMs.

Let me know if further help is needed.

Mike
