Re: The tracking is off when I play back video.
You need to use a head cleaner. Buy a good head cleaning tape and run it for about 10- 15 seconds and see if you problem clears up. Check your tape transport for dust and dirt and clean it out with a small can of compressed air. Checkk the tape heads and see if they are worn out. Usually looks like a black strip in the middle of the head. You may need to replace the heads. I hope this information help you with your problem.

It is not properly tracking the tapes. Bet they were made on another machine. See if there is a manual tracking control. If not, then the auto tracking mechanism is not working and the machine will only play back tapes it has just made but not tapes made with another machine.
If your transferring the video via USB then with Sony Cams you will need to download the drivers and install them (the sony website or google with normally have them)... then restart you computer and attempt to capture again using WMM.
PP seems corrupt, try reinstalling it and/or look at troubleshooting. if still f**ked then try rolling back your drivers to your camcorder and reinstalling them with a clean package.
- if you need details with rolling back drivers, google it.
You camera is PAL and you are attaching with Ntsc TV or VCR. Both Pal and Ntsc are different systems and incompatible to each other.
If you want to see correct playback of your Camera, it requires Pal or Multi-System color TV.

I have had the same problem. There is no way to manually adjust the tracking on this Hitachi, or on most 8mm cameras, for that matter. I copied all of my more recent tapes to DVD first (2 copies of each) and then I went to the oldest tapes, which for some reason were OK. When I got to one tape that gave me trouble, I just let it play in the camcorder for about an hour. It adjusted its own tracking so that the picture was OK. Then, I rewound the tape and copied that one. I still have 2 tapes that will not adjust. I am going to send those out to a copying service. I hope they can adjust the tracking and make the copies I need.
By the way, I used this camera and a Panasonic DMR-E55 to make the DVD copies.
First, try head cleaning by trained technician. Tech will clean manually with cleaning chemical each head to make sure video heads are performing 100%. Otherwise, they will probably quotes you for tracking adjustment. Head cleaning is typically around $25-50. Tracking adjustment might cost you around $100-200 in US depending on service time.
