No dubt about that! I would have take the 3gb ddr2 ram!
In a couple of years from now, when everything supports DDR3 i would have taken the DDR3, but today i take 3gb DDR2!

was your vostro 230 third generation? meaning, did it use DDR2 memory before or always had DDR3? They are not compatible. 2nd generation computers cannot use third gen parts. cpu, ram, most none of that type stuff. the motherboards are different and cannot change. if it was ddr2 memory you have to use ddr2, not ddr3, hope that helps.
Maybe 1GB is the maximum amount of memory that your system will hold. And maybe your system likes memory to be in pairs, so when you put the 1GB in by itself it didn't work, but when you put it in with a 512MB it works.
There are many different specifiactions for RAM.
Firstly is it Desktop or Notebook RAM that you are looking for.

nVidea 9800gt is a good card... probably not a question of if the MB will support it as much as if your power supply will. It needs a secondary 6 pin power connection.
Any MB with 16x PCI slow will run the board. The different RAM types on the MB and Video card will nto matter as much as the throughput of the PCI bus...
2GB ram on you main board, hope you are not running anything serious.... I do a fair amount of video with a 9500GT. Quad Core 2.66, 6 GB ram and am looking to upgrade to an I7 with 12GB and a nVidia 250 or better....
