If you changed the #5 Coil then the code was wrong

You get lots of wrong codes on a ford, as a bad coil
spikes the pcm when grounding out to fire the coils
secondary side

Try putting the old coil back & walking the new one to
another cylinder, may take many days & many miles of
driving to get it fix,but better than a shop guessing, because
they hate fords

Run your tests before you start buying your parts. verify that your fuel pressure is acceptable. a defective fuel pressure reg., clogged fuel filter, tired fuel pump, fuel injector, loose or damaged wiring to the injector or coil, maybe water in the gas or too much fuel cleaner/additive.

Next change swap the injector with another and see of the problem moves.  If it does it's a bad injector.

SOURCE: own a 1997 mercury grand marquis. went to change

The 4.6 does not have an traditional distributor. This year engine should have two coil packs located on the front of each valve cover. Each coil pack controls four cylinders. Some of the plug wires will cross over the front of the engine in a wire loom on top of the alternator. The spark plugs are located down in the intake manafold. they run beside the fuel rail on each side of the intake manafold where it joins to each head. You will need an extention at least 8 to 10 inches long to get at the spark plugs. The plug wire fit snuggly into the intake manafold and have an extention on them that connects to the spark plug.

Mercury grand marquis p0351 p0301 p0305 p0306 codes

po301,305 and 306 codes are cylinder misfire codes and the most common problems for them codes are bad coil packs on them engines.
I would suggest pulling them coil packs and inspecting them very closely for any signs of cracks, build up on the metals and inspect the boots for any signs of white tracking! White tracking is a sign that the boots are failing and allowing fire/spark to jump.
Anytime I replace the spark plugs, I always replace the boots! They are very inexpensive and they too fail often!
Hope this helps.

Mercury grand marquis 2001 change spark plugs and coil but misfire code po305 still check light still on plus hestiating when accerlating on gas pedal

If you changed an individual ignition coil based on
a PO305 & that didn't resolve the issue, then either
the code didn't help & you have a different coil bad or
several

Put back the old coil on #5 & check codes again & walk
a new coil until you get the bad one or more

If you have a shop put a scan tool on it-- use Mode #06
to check misfire counts

Sometimes that doesn't get a really hit & miss coil & your
back to walking all those coils not replaced in the last couple
years

I got code PO 305 on a 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis, what is the spark plug wire part called
This will have a direct coil over ignition with a coil over each spark plug. The coil is the electrical part over the spark plug. The coil also has a rubber part that is called the boot or spark plug boot. The boots can be purchased separately but the coils will come with new boots.

is it #5 coil,

Have you checked to see if there is any spark coming out of the number 5 coil?

and should I replace the coil and spark plug and what should the spark plug be gapped at?

When was the last time the spark plugs where changed? It may be due for all the spark plugs to be changed. The spark plug gap is usually listed on the emissions sticker under the hood. It should be .050 - .056 or very close to that.
