Question about Tomtom GO 300 GPS Receiver

3 Answers

Battery My TomTom NORMALLY works on the internal battery or when pluged into the car battery or AC home charger. I normally leave the TomTom in the car on the mount. When I start the car the Tom Tom powers up. When I shut down the car the Tom Tom powers down. When the Tom Tom is running on the AC charger or the car battery and I disconnect the external power source it continues to work on the internal battery untill I power it down with the power switch. THE PROBLEM: TomTom worked fine today, went to work, shut off car. Got out of work start car, Tom Tom does not power up? Charge indicator is lit. Hold power button 3 seconds Tom Tom powers up and reboots as if the first time used. But then works fine and all personal info is intact. Drive home shut down car, Tom Tom does not go through normal shut down process just turns off (no shut down screen). Now if Tom Tom is hooked up to external power source it will boot up as if first time. If disconnected fron external power source it just goes off without normal shut down. If turned off manually with power switch but left on external power source when restarting it goes on normally (does not need to reboot. BATTERY strength indicator states Full Charge. Unit is out of warranty. I am not afraid to try to fix it myself if I know what to do. I can solder and have done minor repairs on other electronic items. Thanks for your help

Re: Battery

Hey Tom - I have a Go 300 that is about 1.5 years old and it just started doing this *exact* same thing a week or so ago. Have you found out what the deal is as of yet? I tried the reset button on the bottom, but it seems to have no effect. The unit will not work at all on battery power, and every time I start it in the car I have to hold the power button in and get the same thing you do. I also noticed that after it finally starts up, it takes between 1.5 and 7 minutes to acquire the sats.

Unable to turn it on ,only lighted screen and connection ca be seen

First of all, make sure the battery is fully charged. If you're not sure your car charger is working, try charging it with a USB-cable on your PC/Mac.

Once the battery is charged, RESET your TomTom.
Old TomTom's have a RESET button on the bottom. One model has it's reset button hidden under a cover.

Newer devices don't have a reset button. You reset them by "KEEP PRESSING THE POWER BUTTON A LONG TIME"

Try pressing even more then a minute. Eventually you should hear the TomTom "Drumm Roll" (the starup sound), and your GPS would start normally.

If this doesn't work, Try updating the device firmware using a USB-cable and the right software depending your device. Older devices use TomTom HOME, never ones use TomTom MyDrive.

I wish you a lot of succes!

Your Motorola phone charger will not work and it may even damage your GPS! In the package you have a cigarrette lighter adapter for your car - the home charger (AC-charger) you have to purchase separately.

I plugged the system in, the screen would not come on

First check the charger connection. If an alternative charger is available test different chargers.

If the Tomtom is starting, then try first resetting your TomTom.

To reset the TomTom follow the instructions on TomTom website, clicking here: TomTom, portable GPS car navigation systems - Factory reset .

If the Nav is still freezing or is dead after reset, then there is an internal fault.

In both situations the alternatives are going to a TomTom shop or calling the TomTom service number listed on manual and following the instructions given by their representatives.

If the unit is completely dead, as a first thing better going to a TomTom shop and asking to test a different charger.

The charger can also be tested at home using a multimeter on charger connector.

I have a question concerning the tomtom 910. When plugged into the car, the tomtom goes off and on and the battery is constantly low. However, when I charge it at home, it stays on for about 4 hours. What...

Connect your TomTom to the car charger and turn it on. Tap the lower right hand cornor where the sat. signal graph is. On the screen that comes up check to see if it is chargeing while connected to the car charger. It should say charging in the upper right hand cornor where it shows the battery status. If it isn't charging then you have either a bad pin on your windsheild mount or your charger is not working. If the charger is not working it may be as simple as replacing the fuse in the charger.

You cannot replace the battery. If you have a problem with the battery, please contact TomTom customer support. Don't forget that you can use your TomTom device in the car with the car charger and at home with the home charger or home dock even if you are having a problem with the battery.

Hope that helps! Should you have any further questions, please feel free to post them here.

Tom tom not working

  1. First , try a re-set through the 'reset' hole underneath the tomtom. 1 quick short press is all thats required. Unlike others suggest , you do not need to hold it in for anything longer than half a second. You should feel the switch 'click' as its a tactile switch. Don't press too hard as you can damage the switch and cause it to lock ON. Once pressed , try turning the tomtom on as normal. Sometimes a tomtom battery can drop below its normal "shelf" voltage ( normal is about 3.8 volts ). A tomtom charger has a protection circuit inside to stop or slow the current it gives out if there is a short. If your battery HAS dropped volts TOO MUCH ( less than 3 volts ) the charger can "see" the tomtom battery as a "short" and the charger therefore shuts down and doesnt charge the battery. You could leave the charger connected and HOPE that the very small amount of current it's putting out will eventualy bring the battery up over 3 volts. Once it is up near its "shelf" voltage ( called shelf voltage as that is the voltage the battery is at 'on the shelf' ie . when its not powering anything ) the charger will begin to charge as normal....... OR ... you can gain access to the battery and charge it from a bench power supply that has voltage and current meters. Once again , once the battery voltage gets something near 3.8 volts the normal tomtom charger can be used to charge it. You caould connect another normal battery to the tomtom battery just for a few seconds ( not recommended and can be a bit dangerous ) if the normal battery is such as a PP3 9v type it should bring up the tomtom battery to over 3.8 volts in a few seconds. The tomtom can then be charged as normal. .............. It is also possible that some internal IC's ( chips ) have blown inside the tomtom and unfortunatly this would require a specialist repair centre to replace them as they are really very very small and are not a normal soldering job. Good luck. ... if this post has helped you or interested you please rate the author.

You can replace it yourself if you have some experience with dismantling electronic equipment. Unfortunately it is not an easy operation though. The main tools you need are a small star-shaped screwdriver and a soldering iron.

How do I recharge my Tom Tom One?

I talked to TomTom support about recharging. They say that the unit uses more power than it gets, but if you turn the power off while the car is running, it will recharge.
