Well being as modems are essentially telephones you would have to have two seperate phone lines.  Have one computer call the other and use telnet in windows.

Network cable not properly plugged in or may be broken

which OS do you have? XP, Vista, 7, etc. you must have a wireless adapter in your PC to use wireless and it must be enabled.
if not wireless, then you must have an ethernet slot with cable(CAT5) inserted from internet modem/router. if you have a laptop then you have wireless available. there is a key on keyboard to turn wireless on. you have to have your Network assigned to the wireless internet provider too. if you have cable(cat5) connected to a modem or router/modem connection, and you see an ethernet icon in your lower right corner window(looks like a little computer display), then you have an ethernet connection. if not then either the cable is bad or the modem/router is not producing a connection to pc. thats alot i know but i have little knowledge about your internet connection on your pc. you have not given that to me to use

Iwantwindowsxpfreedownload

look, i don't know where you can download Windows XP for free, because almost any OS needs a serial key to make it legit and work properly, but if you find it easier to use windows XP rather than other OS download "Virtual PC." it loads a mock up of the windows OS that you want, and makes your PC seem as if it has that OS, in this case, XP.
sorry i cant be of more help

The drivers for USB device are not installed. (Code 28)

Good Day!

I think the problem is the Driver you are installing, install the driver of the Modem not the usb driver, that is why it was not able to detect the Modem.

Hope I was able to help.

Crashing during Windows Setup

Check out any hardware that doesnot supports windows xp. remove that and reload the os. it works. or remove all the additional addon cards like modem, network card, printers etc., (just maintain only hard disk, cd rom and floppy drive)then install the os. once os installs add the components one by one to so that the os will detect one by one cheers!
