Hold the home button and power button down at the same time, until you see the apple logo on the screen, this is a hard reset simular to holding down the power button on your pc when windows won't stop.

Try this method: - Press and hold the Home button and the Power button together for about 10 -15 seconds. This should shut down your ipod. If you pressed it too long or pressed home too long, it will go into recovery mode. In which case, you ned to press the home and power button together again.
If your ipod is sync with your pc/mac, you can try plugging it in and your pc/mac should detect it and show you options like restore or something.
Upgrade your iTunes version (is your error message your iPod is not elligible for the requested build?). Restoring it with the latest iTunes will download the right firmware and the message will disappear. If it doesn't work with the latest itunes, you may have a broken logic board. If you're out of warranty, somebody has to open the iPod classic and replace the logic board. The part is available on ebay. Here's a guide on how to disassemble an iPod classic. Maybe a tech savy friend can do it for you. If you want to pay to have somebody do it for you there are third partyiPod Repair Services.
To unlock your ipod you will need to do a factory reset. To do so use the following procedure:
1.Make sure the ipod is turned off and connected to the pc via the USB cable. Also make sure that itunes is open on the pc. 2.Hold the sleep (top button) and home (front button) buttons until the apple logo appears. 3.When the apple logo appears let go of the sleep button but keep the home button pressed. 4.When the itunes icon and a picture of a USB cable comes up on the ipod you can let go of the home button. 5.Give it a minute or two then itunes should detect that it has found an ipod in recovery mode.Perform a recovery and update and the ipod should be restored to factory defaults.
First, turn ipod touch completely off(pressing and holding top left button until power off slide shows up on the screen). Then, press and hold the home button right before you plug it into your computer while itunes it opened. Keep home button pressed until itunes says an ipod touch needs to be restored.
My 80GB Ipod classic recently froze. I took it to Apple store and the guy press the Menu and Center Button. Hold them until the APPLE logo appears twice. Then release the button.
Voila, my Ipod work again, no missing data
This has happened to me once and it is an annoyance. You have to press the power button and the home button at the same time until the ipod reacts to the buttons being pressed down together. Once this happens there is a slight possibility that you may have to restore your ipod back to its original settings. This will delete your music, videos, and anything else but if you have purchased the songs, videos, or anything else from itunes or the app store you may be able to get them back. If you downloaded your stuff of the internet than you will have to do that stuff again...
You can try loading the ipod onto the computer in a special mode: 1) connect the ipod to the computer 2) press and hold the on/off switch for five seconds 3) keep that finger on and with your other hand press and hold the home button for thirty seconds, the ipod should "turn off"
4) release the on/off button but keep the home button pressed down for ten seconds or until the Apple logo apears. This process will require that you re-sync your ipod, there will be nothing on the ipod after this process and will need to re-sync.
Apple is very strict to not allow return for liquid exposure. Is it possible the original seller exposed the iPod to liquid? Has it been in extremely high humidity environments like a closed bathroom shower? This could trigger the "exposed" to water detector.
But try to put your iPod in disk mode. Hold top and center buttons simultaneously until you see the Apple symbol and then as soon as the Apple comes up press center and bottom (play) button simultaneously until you see a check mark. Keep trying it may take a few times. If your are successful, open iTunes and then plug the "Disk mode" iPod into your computer and restore using iTunes. If you can't get it, let us know.
