Compaq laptop will not connect to my netgear N300

Try switching the way you connect the wireless. On your laptop there are 2 different ways to connect, one using the the client application that goes with the wireless card, and the other way uses windows to manage and connect to the wireless. Switch them out. If you are using Windows, then use the other or vice versa. Open the software that came with your wireless card it should be on your desktop or in your program list. Click Start/Programs and look for it. For example it might be something like Atheros. Open it and look for a place or check mark on something that says: Let This tool Manage the Wireless, or Use Windows Zero Config to Manage the Wireless.

Driver toshiba satellite a45-s250 wireless network connector

Toshiba Support > Satellite A45-S250 Notebook PC > Atheros 802.11 a/b/g WiFi driver with Cisco WPA support for Windows XP and 2000,

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=SB&os=&category=&moid=555703&rpn=PSA40U&modelFilter=A45-S250&selCategory=2756709&selFamily=1073768663

HOWEVER, it requires the Atheros Client Utility v2.4.2.18, to be installed. If it isn't installed on the laptop, this utility needs to be installed first. Then the Driver above.

Problem on startup with laptop combining internal ethernet and WLAN as if there is only one network connection I am trying to fix my mother's Acer Aspire 3680. It has 1GB of RAM, running XP Home SP3. It...

Sounds like the problem may be related to the power management of the internal ethernet card.

You need to check these settings in the Acer ePower Management software (usually installed with the laptop).
E.g. If you the laptop is not charging then you will not be able to see or change any settings on the internal ethernet card.

If you do not have the Acer ePower Manager installed then you can download it here;

Wireless on this machine is very flaky -- sometimes finds and connects to wireless services, sometimes not. I'm thinking maybe updating the driver would help but can't seem to find it or a reputable...

Here are the drivers for that wireless device but they are dated 2003 so I'm not sure they would be an "update" to your existing drivers.

Are you using Windows to configure and connect or a 3rd party client that came with the card? If using a 3rd party client (such as an Atheros wireless utility) you may want to disable/uninstall it and try the Windows wireless client, sometimes this can solve those pesky connection issues.

Post your results or additional info here.

Wireless LAN problem

Make sure that the built-in wireless lan is disabled. If your pc is XP or vista, uninstall the new WIRELESS LAN(go to control panet, add/remove programs), select the Atheros Software. Leave the WIRELESS ADAPTER connected to your pc. Insert the disc, do not run the set up. RESTART THE PC. The drivers for the WIRELESS ADAPTER should install, if not load drivers manually.
MAKE SURE WIRELESS ZERO CONFIGURATION for XP is running. You should be able to detect wireless networks.
