Your drive is basically dead. The clicking you hear is the actuator arm for the r/w heads resetting as it trys to read the drive. Can be caused by a worn main bearing. Usually caused either by age or the notebook being dropped. When off the hard drives can sustain a fairly good impact 3-4 ft and still likely survive, however when in operation they don't respond well @ all when dropped from even a small distance.....

Virtually no way to repair. If data was critical, there are companies that will open the drive and recover the drive contents, but it is a costly procedure!!!

You will likely need to replace the drive. I had a situation once where tapping the hard drive lightly near the drive motor has got a drive to spin up one last time, but, only seen it work once. Not a recommended procedure; but worth a try if you're desperate..... Did you backup your data? If not, maybe a practice to start in the future.

Hitachi hard drive clicking and not working

1) A harddrive is built in a Clean Room. A room that is 99.9 percent dust free. Technicians going to enter the room have to don suits, and hair guards, plus walk through an Air Corridor.

2) Upon opening a harddrive it's 'Lifecycle' is done. The harddrive is no good now. There is a VERY small time limit to remove wanted personal data.

I have Transcend 1TB 25 inch StoreJet H2 USB 20 Portable Hard Drive... not long enough, it's broken; there's a sound "clutch - clutch - clutch"... I cries for my valuable data... Why...

Inside the plastic case of the Transcend StoreJet H2 1TB, is a small circuit board, and a laptop size harddrive.

The small circuit board is an Interface Board.
The harddrive plugs into it, or there are cables which come from the Interface Board, and plug into the harddrive.
The other end of the Interface Board has a USB cable attached to it.

Most of the time it is this small circuit board that fails. Very rarely does the harddrive fail.
(Unless the external harddrive was dropped)

I would suggest removing the harddrive from the Transcend, and putting it into an inexpensive external enclosure.

One example,

About 2 months ago I bought a samsung s2 portable 1Tb. It has worked fine until yesterday. It slipped down from where it was laying (while plugged in and running) and was hanging the 20 cm usb-cabel. Now I...

Hanging by the 20cm USB cable?

The cable could be stretched, and wires broken inside.
The cable to small circuit board, inside the case, could have broken solder joints.
The circuit board inside the Samsung's case could be broken.

Inside that small outer case of the Samsung portable is a laptop size Harddrive.
The harddrive measures 2.5 inches across in width.

(6.4cm. In comparison a desktop size harddrive is 3.5 inches across in width, or 8.9cm)

The harddrive is a SATA unit also.

This is a general example of a 2.5 SATA harddrive,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148591

Inside the outer case (External Enclosure) is also a small circuit board (PCB)
The harddrive plugs into the small circuit board, and the circuit board has a USB cable attached to it.

(Or there is a small cable from circuit board to harddrive. Then a USB cable to the circuit board)

I would suggest removing the 2.5 SATA harddrive, and install it into an economical external enclosure.

Example of a 2.5 SATA External Enclosure,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3195233&CatId=2783

Basic guidance in removing the Harddrive from a Samsung S2 Portable,

1) It looks as though the outside front is a thick cover like a label. It may be that you peel back the corners, and there will be a screw in each corner.

(For example; Where it states Samsung. Go to the right corner. Does this cover-like material peel back? Is there a screw underneath? Remove it.
Go to the opposite corner. Now above to the left and right corners)

The unit looks to come apart in two halves.

Might just be held together by sticky tape.

Here are some videos performing opening the external enclosure, (Case) of other external portable harddrives,

I have plugged my lap top power into 'my book' and yes I have cooked a component on the PSB card, is the car repairable or can it be replaced?

It would be better to remove the harddrive inside the WD My Book, and install it into an economical external enclosure.
Suggest you forget trying to repair the interface circuit board inside.

If I am all wrong, and have misread your problem, please state in a Comment.

If I am correct so far, and if memory serves, the harddrive inside is a SATA model.
I don't know however if it is a laptop sized harddrive, or a desktop sized harddrive.

A laptop sized harddrive is 2-1/2 inches across in width. (2.5 inches)
A desktop harddrive is 3-1/2 inches across in width. (3.5 inches)

Once you open the case you will know.

By using an economical external enclosure you will have a external harddrive again.

This is one example of an economical 2.5 SATA external enclosure,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3195233&CatId=2783

This is one example of an economical 3.5 SATA external enclosure,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2145406&CatId=2780

This is information that may help in opening the WD's case, and extracting the harddrive,

{TIP: DO NOT work directly on a carpet floor! It is a high area of Static electricity. Work on a table}

WD 500G HDD suddenly un-readable; changed name to local disk, says I need to format in order to use it. I have tons of important stuff on there.

Could you confirm if the problem with the drive not being recognized is a problem with the USB cable? I have a 250GB passport and it worked fine with my XP. Once I decided to reformat it to NTFS and tried to do so by plugging into my new windows7 laptop the problems started.

My lacie drive fell off desktop and is not recognized as readable by my Mac. What chance do I have of recovering the data?

Inside that LaCie external harddrive's enclosure is a regular SATA harddrive.
The kind that fits in a desktop computer (3.5 inches in width), or laptop. (2.5 inches across in width)

Open the external enclosure (Case) of the LaCie, remove the harddrive, and install it into a suitable external enclosure.
(Laptop size, or desktop size)

The external enclosure has a USB cable also. Just plug it into any available USB port on your desktop computer.

Do I know for a fact that the harddrive is okay, and this will fix the problem?
No sir/maam I do not.

But IMHO this is the first diagnostic method to use.

IF the harddrive is a desktop sized harddrive, it could be installed in your desktop computer as a Slave drive.
However the above method is so much easier, and it allows your harddrive to be an external harddrive once more.

Inside the external enclosure of the LaCie external harddrive, is a small circuit board that the Harddrive plugs into.
It is this small circuit board that receives the damage in most cases.

If the problem is the Harddrive itself, a professional data recovery shop will;

A) Try a new, or good used harddrive circuit board.
Check to see if the harddrive's circuit board received the damage.

B) If the circuit board proves to be good then the next step is to remove the Platters inside.
The room used is a Clean Room.
A room that is 99.9 percent dust free. (In most cases)

The Platters are installed into the case of a compatible harddrive, that has the Platters removed.
Then as much information as possible is copied off.

There are other methods data recovery specialists use also.

[A Harddrive is built in a Clean Room. 99.9 percent dust free. The technicians wear a Clean Suit, that resembles what a doctor would wear in an operating room.
They enter the work area after going through a corridor, fitted with air jets at various levels.

If a harddrive is opened up in a room that is not a Clean Room, the harddrive's 'life expectency' drops to a day, or a few hours. The dust 'kills' them ]

Observe the other videos also.

Examples of both a SATA 2.5 external enclosure, and a SATA 3.5 SATA enclosure,
(The Harddrive's width is measured in inches. (2-1/2 inches for a laptop drive, 3-1/2 inches for a desktop drive)

SATA 2.5 external enclosure,
