Question about Lexmark Z2420 Printer
Sometimes the cartridges are just plain defective, no matter how much they cost. save yourself some grief and just replace both of them and see what happens.

Windows 98, is your operating system, thank you for clearing that up. Windows 98 is very unstable and the most hacked operating system in the hacker community. I recommend trying Ubuntu. Download for free and burn it to a CD-R and reboot to try it. You can always install it later if you enjoy it. It's simple to learn because of the new GUI. Most drivers are automatically configured and I think your printer is supported for Linux (ubuntu).

I have to ask this question of you, just to make sure this is not an issue. Are you using a factory new ink cartridge?
Please consider the following:
If you are using a refilled or third party cartridge that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges.
They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead.
If you are using factory new cartridges, then please call the manufacturers Technical Support for assistance with the warranty on the cartridges

Make sure you are using the correct cartridges for your model. Try to remove both the cartridges. Close the cover. Unplug and replug the printer into the power outlet to reset itself. When the printer turns on, reinsert the cartridges when prompted. Close the cover and check for any error. If none, try to print again.

Make sure you are inserting the correct version of black cartridge for your model. Try to remove both cartridges from the printer. Close the cover. Unplug and re-plug the printer into the power source to reset it. When the printer turns on, reinsert your cartridges. You can also try to insert a different known working black cartridge to determine if the other is faulty.
