What does common mean on a dimmer switch

The common wire is usually the white wire. Some switchs are only wired with a hot (black) wire. So not all switchs need a common wire (leg).

Have a d703 dimmer switch, trying to hook it up to a three way switch. electical outlet has a pass & seymour switch which has a red and blk connected on both sides of the switch and the whites tied...

If you had four wires, and your dimmer only has three, then it's not going to work. Your existing switch is often called a 4-way (in the US anyway). It is used in between two or more other three way switches. If you have only two switches, they can both be 3 ways (using only three wires). Additional switches have to be 4-ways (using four wires). An option is to use your dimmer at the first or last switch location. But if you want the dimmer at your chosen location, you need a 4-way dimmer. By the way, you can use a 4-way switch in a 3-way situation, by not using one of the terminals on the switch. Please vote if you found this helpful good luck Al K

Need a wiring diagram for 696 seriess switch

You don't need a wiring diagram.
The screws tell the story.

On one side of device has 2 screws.
On other side has 2 screws.
Green screw is for bare ground wire.

1) One side will have dark screws and the other side will have brass screws. The dark screws will be connected together with a brass plate. The brass screws will be separate.
2) One side will have brass screws and the other side will have silver screws. The brass screws will be connected together with a brass plate. The silver screws will be separate.

#1 Hot from breaker connects to dark screw. Wires to Load (light, fan) connect to brass screws.
#2 Hot from breaker connects to brass screw. Wires to Load (light, fan) connect to silver screws.

I to want replace a regular duplex outlet with a TM818-WCC6 and want just the outlet switched. How do I wire it?

The Pass and Seymour plug-switch combo has 3 screws
There is a dark screw on one side .... the black Hot wire from breaker box connects here

There are silver and brass colored screws on other side of device

The white Neutral from breaker box connects to silver screw connects here >>> this will give power to your receptacle
The black wire going to Load (light, fan, motor that you want switch to control) connects to brass colored screw ... the switch controls power to Load

How to test for black Hot
Remove devices and separate wires
Turn on power
Test each wire to bare copper wire
Tester lights up on black Hot wire
How to test for white Neutral
Test black Hot to each white wire
Tester lights up on Neutral
