If CCFL lamps are weak, this might happen. Check the control voltage comes to backlight inverter board from the main board too. It should vary according to increase in brightness.

The ballast board is bad. This board is where the wires from the lamp connect to. It controls the lamp. It needs to be replaced. You can get one here: TV Parts Universal TV Stands DLP Chips ShopJimmy

Hi, Did the TV go darker gradually or did it happen all of a sudden? Sounds like the tube went!

Picture on tv is dark panasonic mod pt47wx42

IT may be if the set has not been "serviced" in a while a cleaning issue. If picture got gradually darker try something easy first.

Unplug set and remove back cover.

Locate the three large black lens in set based on model number, use either a lens cloth or a paper towel with glass cleaner sprayed on it and clean all three lens.

The lens are the light source for your picture and if dusty the picture will be darker and duller looking than it should be.

If this is your problem it is a good idea to clean the lens at least one time a year.

Let me know if it works OR IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS.

Problem with the Philips Magnavox 9P6034C 60 in. Rear Projection Television, had TV for 16 years. Picture gradually got darker and less clairity

the projection tubes do wear out over time and there is no fix but to replace them. you might first check to make sure the lenses and mirror are clean, do not use compressed air to clean as you may force dust between the lenses. if the picture is darker at the edges or a different hue then the coolant is likely contaminated and needs changed

Dark picture on RCA Scenium 61 in DLP

Yes, the lamp will gradually get darker as it nears it's end. The rolling lines sounds more like the set is on a local channel for the cable hook up. If your local area has a channel 3 or 4 live terestrial broadcast simply tune the cable box output to the other one, the same for the tv.
If this is cable/local broadcast issue it will go away in Febuary when the NTSC broadcast ends.

Yes it could be other things, but to be honest, I wouldn't waste time or money on a set that old. If the picture was perfect and something else went bad, perhaps a small investment would be worth it, but with your description, I'd pass.

Time for a new set.
