I have a Ryobi W660 circular saw. While cutting, the saw died, but did not smoke or otherwise appear to have motor (or even brush) burn. Does this model have any thermal (or other) safety cutouts in it? ...

It's almost certainly the trigger switch. They are no longer available. I've got the same saw, and it's a darn shame, but it's headed for the trash.

As it is a new machine, you should return it for warranty repair or exchange. Make sure that the electricity source will power a working lamp. Good luck!

Your switch is broken and needs to be replaced. You can do it yourself when you get the part from a Ryobi dealer.
