SOURCE: Notebook will not boot

If I understand what your problem is...
I had the same problem, it was a caused by bad Windows XP install CD.
Call Gateway and explain the situation, you may need to have a magnifying glass handy to read the tiny engraved lettering in the center of the CD disk.
Have your 'Product Key' available.
If you have some kind of sales receipt, or other "Proof of Purchase" have it handy too.
You will need to tell them, you do not have the program installed on other computers.
They can send you another disk.
This method will only work if you have a legal copy of the program.

Creating recovery discs After setting up the computer for the first time, be sure to create a set of recovery discs of the full factory image. the recovery discs are used to start up (boot) the computer and recover the operating system and software to factory settings in case of system instability or failure.

IBM thinkcenter says no os after installing DVD writer

Did you install a SATA or an PATA (IDE) drive?

First check that the data cables are connected to both the hard drive and the motherboard. (I know that I've frequently had the cables come loose from the motherboard on my ThinkCentre 8433 when I work in the case.) Also check that the power cables are firmly connected.

Next make sure that you have no disc in the DVD writer. (Or enter the BIOS by pressing F1 (IIRC) repeatedly on start up. Make sure that the hard drive is the boot disc.) While in the BIOS, you can check if the hard drive is recognized by the motherboard. If you don't see the disc listed, recheck the data and power cables.

If the hard drive was working before you replaced the dvd drive, you may have changed the master/slave assignment on the drives (if they are both IDE). Remove the drives from the computer and check the jumpers. (These will depend on the manufacturer. Use either cable select or master/slave as needed) The boot drive should have the jumper set to master or cable select. In the case of cable select, the boot hard drive should be connected to the black connector. The slave drive goes to the grey connector.

If you connected a SATA drive, try swapping the SATA ports (SATA 0 or SATA1) that has the optical drive connected to it.

The next thing to try requires either the Windows install or upgrade disc for your version of the OS (including the Service Pack) or a third party partition manager/repair utility disc. You'll need to reset the boot order to boot from the optical drive (or press F12 on starting the computer). Use the Recovery Console (for the Windows disc) to find any existing OS installs on your hard drive and attempt to repair the master boot record or boot sector if it still exists on the drive. Please add a comment with your OS for specifics on using the Recovery Console. (I replaced my WinXP with Win7 and the methods are different.)

You may have been unlucky and had the hard drive fail while you were working in the computer. See if the recovery partition (F10 on boot) still works or use your system image (Rescue and Recovery DVDs) will restore your computer to the last backup. Try doing the restore to a new hard drive if the recovery discs don't work.

I hope this helps. Please add a comment with any comments that will help me give more specific assistance for your missing OS.

Have you tried while in Windows, to use the Start Menu, find Acer on the All Programs list, and locate the recovery utility? I have an Acer laptop - an Aspire - and had to do exactly that. I used the built-in recovery routine on the Acer Laptop and was able to rebuild my laptop to the condition of when it just came out of the box, brand new.It will delete all your installations since you got it, applications and documents and photos, etc., will be gone, but your laptop will function as if brand new. Good luck with it. -a.

Your install discs are bad. Please don't shoot the messenger. Call Toshiba for new discs. Here is the number (it took me 30 minutes to find this. Please give me a 4-thumbs-up rating. If you don't, I spent time away from family for free).

Hi my acer nav 50 there is problem with bootmgr compressed, i understand i have to insert window 7 to repair the netbook. however i have no external cd drive to begin with and no cd for it. it is possible...

I wouldn't use a hard drive but it is possible, the method for doing so would format the whole hard drive. If you don't want to do it with a CD then I would go with a flash drive. They cost as little as $4.First you need to create a System Recovery Disc from another Win 7 machine
  • Go to Control Panel > System and Maintenance
  • Backup and Restore
  • On the left pane select "Create a system repair disc"
  • Burn the disc.
At this point you could just buy a external usb CD/DVD drive and uncompress the boot partition
Or continue onNow to take that recovery CD and get it on to a USB
  • Leave the recovery disc in the machine you made it on
  • Download ImgBurn and create an image from the disc
  • Download Win32 image writer
  • Insert a USB flash drive or harddrive
  • Run Win32 Image Writer and select the image you made and the hard drive/flash drive and click write.
Now you will need to plug it into the acer and boot from it.Get to the dos cmd prompt and type the following commands in orderbootrec /FixMbrbootrec /fixbootbootrec /rebuildbcdexitrestart the computer and you should be good
Comment back if you need more assistance

What does minint\system 32\kdcom.dll error code 4 mean It came up when I tried to do a system recovery on my laptop. Now all I get is a virus running scans for viruses..... How can I fix this?

This is a virus, you have to run your virus program in safe mode. As the system starts to boot up, hit the F8 key and select "Safe Mode". Once the system boots into safe mode run your antivirus software and do a full scan. Verify your system is virus free. Then follow these steps...

Boot From Disk
Insert your Windows XP/Vista disc and boot from it. If you don't know how to boot from a disc, during the your splash there is, hopefully, a legend that pop's up briefly (most often at the top right of the screen but not always). It will usually say two things: SETUP and BOOT MANAGER. Next to those will be the keys to press to start either. Press the one for the BOOT MANAGER. Unfortunately its not the same for every computer, but usually its something like F10 or F12.
Enter Repair
So once your fully booted into the XP/Vista disc, you'll have three options. Choose the REPAIR option by pressing R.
Select Installation
Recovery Console is command based. You'll be asked for the drive that your Windows is installed on. Typically its "1" unless you have multiple installs.
CD Drive Letter
When you get to the prompt C:\WINDOWS>, you will need to figure one thing out before moving on and that's what your CD drive letter is. Try typing "D:" without quotes. When D:\> comes up, type "DIR" without quotes. If a list comes up that has "I386" in it, then remember your drive letter is "D." If not then replace "D" in the above directions with "E."
The Repair
Once you have found your disc drive letter, follow each of the following commands line by line.
C:\WINDOWS\>CD system32
this will move you to the system32 folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32>COPY kdcom.dll C:\
this copy is a backup in case things don't work
C:\WINDOWS\system32>DEL kdcom.dll
this will delete the original not the backup
C:\WINDOWS\system32>COPY D:\I386\kdcom.dl_
replace the D if you have to with whatever your disc drive letter was above. the kdcom.dl_ is not a typo either.
C:\WINDOWS\system32>REN kdcom.dl_ kdcom.dll
renames kdcom.dl_ you copied to kdcom.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32>EXIT
reboots your computer.

Hi Susana,

That sounds a little bit drastic . . . and probably unnecessary.

First, hold down the power button on the notebook for about 5 seconds - until it switches off. Wait a few seconds, then press the power button once to switch on again. Shortly after switching on, you should be presented with a list of options. Use the arrow keys to highlight "Start Windows Normally" then press ENTER.

You can't re-install from the backup discs if the notebook is frozen - you need to switch it off first. The backup discs can then be installed either at startup or after loading Windows. If Windows starts up normally after powering off, you shouldn't need to do anything else. If it still fails to start, please post back for further assistance.

Regards,
BElectric.

How to reformat laptop

  • 1

If you have the recovery cd, you can just pop-in the CD, select the reformat option and the installation process will continue automatically. Some laptop might have a special partition in the drive contains the operating system, drivers, etc. in case you want to reformat your laptop without the CD.

  • 2

If you don't have the recovery CD, you usually can request one from the manufacturer. Otherwise, if you want to do a clean install, make sure you download all the drivers for your laptop, this may includes: motherboard, chipset, graphic card, sound card, modem, network card. Once you do that, put in the OS CD and start installing.

  • 3

If you decided to do a clean install without the recovery CD, it would be best to create partition on your harddrive first, so you can have dedicated partition for operating system and backup. The next time you want to reformat your harddrive, you can just reformat that particular partition ex. C:\
