I would run a chkdsk on the system drive. More info can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265#method2

NOTE: The site I provided says XP but will work on Vista, 7, and 8.

Thanks however I have not been able to get it to boot at all since installing a new chip heatsink and fan. I may have fried my chip but I do not know how to test that.

Computer keeps shuting down

Shuts down when? Right after you boot it up? Or does it run a while then shut down?
If it shuts down after it has run for a while then the computer is probably running hot. Either the CPU Fan is not working or the Thermal Paste has dried up or is too thin to keep the CPU Cool. To prove it is running hot, let the computer sit for a while then boot it up. Once it boots up use it until it shuts down and immediately try to boot it up. If it does not boot up that means it's running hot. But if you let it cool off then try booting up you will be successful.

Difficulty in booting computer, I push start button & attempts to start but then shuts down. other times starts ok , not consistant

If by "shuts down" you mean the power turns off, you have a hardware problem. If you are running from the battery, the battery may need replacement; otherwise, the problem is more serious and should be brought in to a repair facility.
If you mean something else, please clarify further; specifying the actual model of Apple computer under discussion would really be valuable.

Won't shut down, won't finish boot - no functionability

I have had a similar problem since I bought this printer. When I make a copy or scan a document, the printer refuses to print anything else directly from the computer. If I turn offf the printer, I get the "printer is shuttting down" message in the display, however it never shuts down ( I've even left it overnight!) I have to pull the power plug out and wait ~30 seconds and then plug it back in to restore functionality in the print mode. I get some kind of nag screen at start up telling me that I didn't shut it down properly but I have just learned to ignore that. This problem is so consistant that I don't even try to print after making copies without unpluging the main power plug. Another issue you will probably run into is if you install Service Pack 3 on Win XP all your documents will print out in mirror image. HP's lame fix for this is to have you make custom settings in the print manager to remove the mirroring mode from the settings!! I am just about ready to change brands after being a faithful HP customer for over 25 years. They seem to have no interest in fixing known software issues anymore, as their push is to get new devices in the pipeline as soon as possible.
Good Luck

Compaq V2710us shuts down randomly with a loud click

Loud click sounds like either a short or overload, causing ground default. recheck inside for any loose connections anything grounding out the motherboard.
