Could be a couple of things. First thing I'd suggest is taking the actual hard drive out of the enclosure. If it was just the bridge controller in the enclosure that burnt out, then you might still be able to gain access to the data by connecting the drive directly to a computer or try it in a different enclosure.

If that doesn't work then it may be a more serious problem. I could be that the controller board shorted out. Simply changing the board with another one from a similar hard drive won't work, because there is adaptive data that is stored on the controller that must be maintained with the original drive.

The other problem, and it's something we see often in these drives, if there was brief cut to the power, sometimes the heads won't park all the way, and they seize to the platters. This prevents the drive from spinning up. If that is the case though you would hear a faint buzz buzz sound coming from the drive. You'd also hear that same sound if the spindle motor was seized, but since you didn't say the drive was dropped or bumped, I doubt that's the problem.

Thanks for your help. There are no sounds or any sign of power reaching the hard disk, so no sounds coming from the disk. if i take it out of it's housing and connect to a desktop pc is this as straightforward as installing a regular hard drive?

Yes, it will be just like hooking up any other hard drive with a SATA interface.

SOURCE: My external hard drive is unreadable

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it. If not - try to remove the drive from USB casing and connect it directly to your PC or put into another USB enclosure. This should help if the problem is with the enclosure itself and not with the drive.

SOURCE: Flashing green power light

Spoke to maxtor. The blinking green light on the power cord is a problem with the external casing for the hard drive. Several of the posts talked about taking the case apart and connecting it to the pc to download information. I thought they were crackpots. After talking to the service tech on the website it looks like that is the only fix. So... based on all the posts with the same issue I may avoid this product line int he future. Hopefully it is truely a backup for you in which case toss the old one and buy a new ext. HD. If it isn't a backup take it apart gingerly, download the information, replace the hardrive.

SOURCE: PC not recognising Iomega Prestige 320gb usb portable hard drive

Does the drive show in Device Manager? Right click on 'My Computer' and select properties, the open device manager.. Navigate down to Disk Drives or Hard Drives, click on the plus sign and see if your drive is listed. If it is, then right click on the drive name and open properties for the drive. Click on the 'Volumes' tab and hit the 'Populate Button'. It may be the disk just needs initialising, then reformatting before you can use it. If it does need initializing, a wizard should appear to guide you through the process!
If this doesn't solve your problem, try using a different USB cable and/or USB ports on your computer, and ensure to unplug all other USB devices other than keyboard & mouse.

My external hdd has is not detecting

Seagate is a company that manufactures external hard drives.

These hard drives can be used to house large files or even to backup an entire hard drive.

When your Seagate external hard drive is not working properly, you might ready to send it into the company for repair.

Before you send it away, you can troubleshoot the problem and potentially save yourself a lot of time and grief.

Look over the power cable going from the wall outlet to the back of the Seagate hard drive. Make sure that there aren't any breaks or tears in the electrical wiring.

If there are breaks, replace the power cord.

Look over the power cable and make sure that it is plugged into the wall outlet in your home as well as plugged into the back of the hard drive.

Plug the power cable directly into the wall outlet or into a surge protector.

Do not plug the power cable into an extension cord.

Seagate Data Cable

Disconnect all of the USB devices that are plugged into your computer's USB ports except for your mouse and your keyboard.

Disconnect the Seagate external hard drive from your computer.

Unplug the power cable from the back of the Seagate external hard drive and restart your computer.

Wait until your computer has fully booted and then plug the power cable back into the hard drive.

Look over the USB data cable to make sure that there are breaks or tears in the cable.

Look over the ends of the cable where they meet the computer and the hard drive.

Make sure the pins are straight.

Replace the cable if needed.

Plug the data cable into the back of the hard drive.

Plug the data cable into your computer.

Hope this helps.

Hard disk clicks won't spin

Clicking Hard drive When a hard disk makes a clicking sound and the computer does not detect it then the hard disk is faulty. This is commonly known as "The click of death".
There is no way of fixing this hard drive, if you need to recover your data, then there are companies that can recover data off faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

I lost power at my house and when the powr came back on my hard drive won't turn back on

how do you know that your hard disk is not turning on? Get the message displayed on the screen when you turn on your desktop first, if it says "boot device failed" or something like that (depends on motherboard model, company and bios version) , check your hard disk is detected or not by bios if not so, open your desktop cup's cover were something made with plastic or rubber on you hand and touch hard disk to see if it is running while pc is on (if running, you will feel something moving inside). If hard disk is detected by bios then it's a case of damaged operating system, just recover or re install operating system. This kind of problem happens for bad sector of hard disk caused by sudden power loss. If hard disk is not detected by bios or running, make sure machine is turned off first, just unplug the power cord of hard disk and plug it back then restart your machine to see if hard disk runs. If not so , go to some repairing shop to check your hard disk.

My seagate free agent 320gb hard drive won't power on

click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or

if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver

if this fails to fix the problem

check usb leads for secure dust free seating

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

if this fails to fix the problem
type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter.

Then restart computer then check.

Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4

if still no luck
you might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap
hope this helps

My seagate freeagent 1tb is blinking whit lights and my computer does not recognize it. Help me

***Please NOTE***
Touch the drive and put your ear to it, to test if the drive is spinning and working. Do this while it is powered on. Also, try disconnecting the USB cable, reboot the computer, re-connect USB cable to another USB port on computer. If you still have the same issue, try the below solutions.
  • Make sure the computer and external hard drive are powered on.
  • Disconnect the external drive's USB or the eSATA cable, which ever one you're using.
  • Disconnect the power supply plug from the external drive.
  • Power off the computer.
  • Disconnect the computer's power supply cord for 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the computer.
  • Power on the computer.
  • Connect the power supply to the external drive.
  • Connect the drive's USB or the eSATA cable and check for detection.
If the still no detection and still blinking lights on the drive, check the power supply to the drive.
Check to see what the led light on the power supply is doing.
If it's blinking, power down the drive, unplug data cable and then reconnect the power supply to another electrical outlet. If it still blinks repeatedly, then you power supply is bad.
If the led is solid (lit and not blinking) follow the same steps from above to connect it to another outlet.
Next, plug the power supply to the external drive and power it up.
If the power supply starts to blink repeatedly, then your controller board inside the enclosure is bad.

Thank you for the opportunity to help you.

St3160827as seagate hdd is not detecting in bios , other new seagate hdd is working fine with the same connection(sata cable and power card) I have imp data in that hdd ,pls help me how to get data...

Turn your computer off.
Disconnect the power cord.
Disconnect all other disk-drives and CD/DVD drives, leaving only the "suspect" drive connected.
Restart your computer, and enter BIOS SETUP, and see if the drive is detected, and how it is connected (primary/secondary, master/slave).

Read the model-number and serial-number and manufacture-date on the disk's label,
and access Seagate's web-site, to check the warranty-status of the drive.
If the warranty is valid, Seagate will replace the drive, at minimal cost to you.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

My seagate hard drive cannot be detected on the desktop anymore. Any ideas what to do? I have a Mac Powerbook G4

am not so sure if this is a similar issue with iomega external drive in which the drive wont show up on My Computer but when the external drive was plugged into an ubuntu machine the drive was being detected and working just fine.

Please try to do the same. plug your external drive to an ubuntu machine and lets see if it can be detected. If it is then the hard disk has a similar issue with iomega drives. check this link.
