Can't turn off Hard Drive

The error means that you are using a file on the external hard drive and that it can not close that file when it is use. You have to close the program that is using the file first.

Example:
Lets go on the assumption that you have your music collection on the external. If you still have your music player running when you try to disconnect, you will be greeting with the same error message.

If the external contains any files that your Operating System uses, you will get this message anytime the computer is on. An example of this can be your "Page File".

Shutting the computer down correctly is your safest bet until you find exactly what file is being used and what program is using it. During shut down, the computer closes any running programs. With no programs running, it will safely disconnect from the external HD because there will be no files in use.

If you manually disconnect it while the file is in use, you could very easily corrupt the file and make it unusable. This is comparable to an Operating System getting corrupted from a computer not being shut down correctly (pulling the power from wall without doing a shut down).

Hope this helps.

SmartDisk turns on, has a blue light but shows no icons. I was in the process of copying from my camera. I turned on the SmartDisk, it showed a file icon and the HDD icon. I pressed copy and it...

I had the same problem but it felt like the drive was working. I took a chance, inserterd a 4GB CF card, and pressed the copy button. I hoped it would shut off after the copy was made due to the 30 second inactiviy timeout. After about 10 minutes, the blue backlight to turned off and it powered down. I plugged the Photobank into a laptop via USB cable and checked the original CF card files against the Photobank files. Success! All files were copied!

No icon on the desk top. Was working but disappeared for some reason.

I had the very same problem. My computer stopped recognising the drive. On the other hand I had it working quite a long time. I suspected it was just overworked. So I switched it off, let it cool down, ( I used an old admin trick and put it in the fridge for a few minutes, in a plastic bag), restarted the computer and connected and powered up the drive. And Voila! It's working great again. I don't know if they have some overheating switch but this worked for me.

Good Luck!

My Book (G:) icon is different

Hi,
no you there iss no big problem.
The icon of your hdd iss created from the autorun.inf

http://www.fiveanddime.net/notes/hd-icons.html

Change hard drive icons Change hard drive icons:

To change the icon for your hard drive, create the
following file in notepad:

[autorun]
icon=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Pifmgr.dll,36

Notice it's two lines.
If your hard drive is C:
click Save As... and navigate to C:
and save it as autorun.inf
enclose it in quotes so Notepad won't put a .txt
on the end of it
The path specified is the typical Windows path
yours may vary, but you'll have that dll file.
The 36 at the end is the number of the icon I chose.
(Icons in a file are numbered, starting at 0.)
To see the change, open Windows Explorer; click
F5 if needed to refresh.
To preview your icon options, select an icon on
your desktop, right-click and select
Properties, then Change Icon. You can also select
any other .dll file in your computer, although most
won't have icons.
The common Windows icons are in
C:\Windows\System\shell32.dll
(xp = C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll)
You can also point to a single icon.
Using the example above:

[autorun]
icon=c:\windows\cursors\myicon.ico

I have three hard drives and nine partitions; under
WinMe, I had to move the icon/dll to each
partition and edit the autorun.ini, i.e.
C:\Windows\System\Pifmgr.dll,32 became Pifmgr.dll,32.
WinMe also wouldn't let me change the icons
for the primary partitions of the first two
drives, but did let me change the
primary partition icon of the third drive.

No external drive icon on desk top

This happened to me as well - i have been reading that it could be the power supply adaptor. If you can try another one - it might solve the problem. The adaptors seem to either be faulty or made to stop working. Great news for us the consumer!!

I have a IMac version 10.5.5. Connected to it is a 500GB D2 Quadra HD ESATA FW800/400 USB Lacie. All of a sudden one day the icon on the desktop is no longer there. I've shut off the computer, turned...

Try this again, shut everything down and take out all power cables.

Leave for a minute.

Put all the power cables back in and power everything back up, Mac first then the Lacie.

If this doesn't work, try going to disk utilities with the drive plugged in and see if the drive icon if displayed on the left. If it is you should be able to highlight it and click "mount"
