My internet keeps going out. Comes back on when I shut down the modem and reboot. Goes out after not using

1. disconnect all cables and reconnect
2. try factory resetting the router (hold down reset button in back for more than 12 seconds)
3. if it is still happening call your ISP
4. if your ISP does not own the modem then you need to replace it yourself.

Reset the modem by removing the power cable from the back of the modem for a full 30 seconds and plugging it back in.

This is sometimes referred to as "power cycling" the modem, and is a good way of clearing network timeouts and other problems that can appear on modems that have been running continuously for some time.

Reset the modem by unplugging the power cord from the electrical outlet or surge protector into which it is plugged.

This is a good alternative to removing the power cord from the back of the modem if it is difficult to get to the modem because of its physical location. Count the full 30 seconds and plug the modem back in to complete the reset.

Reset the modem by pressing the reset button the back of the modem.

The button itself is recessed into a hole to prevent accidental resetting, so you will need a pen or some similar thin utensil that can fit inside the hole.

Press the pen into the hole until you feel the button depress and then let go.

This is sometimes called a "hard reset" or "hard reboot," as this will restore the modem to its factory default settings

Hope this helps

Does it feel hot to the touch? Is it dusty? Do you have it sitting where it can get air circulation around it? If it is getting air and isn't dusty the unit might be getting glitchy. They can do that before they go out sometimes. It may need to be replaced. However you may also have a problem with the connection itself on the other end (the provider's end). If you don't have a static ip address most ISP's will assign a different ip address if/when the modem is rebooted sometimes, but they can also keep the same ip address for a long time dispite rebooting. (when you unplug and start it again it is rebooting). You might want to check with your provider and see if they can change it to see if that helps. Sometimes it's their end that is glitchy...

I have had this same problem with Qwest using a new iMac and MacBook on the Actiontec modem. Qwest did two things: first we reset the modem which was fairly simple and took only about 5 minutes. However, this fix lasts only a few weeks and it comes back. I have just ordered a new modem since there seems to be a problem with the Actiontec device with the newer high speed internet.
I'd try the reset before doing anything else. Good luck.

Modem Problem?

In order to really test your modem you need to call more than just 1 (your ISP's) number. If you are not getting 56k connects, you should try your modem with other local/toll/toll-free numbers. This is a list of some toll-free numbers, the 3Com "Line Test" Number (a toll-call), and links to various ISP local access number listings Setting up an account with a Free ISP is another way you can test and isolate modem/ISP problems.
1-847-330-2780 - USR Linetest number - this is a toll call; if you log-in as "Line Test" with a v.34 modem, it will attempt to determine if your line will support 56k connections.
1-847-330-4569 - US Robotics' V.92 Test number - this is a toll call; the server is a 3Com Total Control HiPer ARC running V.92 server side code that supports PCM upstream.
The following numbers use toll circuits but are free to the caller (as long as you don't log in):
1-800-245-3828 - (Canadian weather BBS)
1-800-590-4857 - (IBM Global network access # x2 and V.90 3Com Server)
1-800-784-3638 - (Netcom - supports V.90)
1-888-861-8490 - (MCI/Worldcom))
1-888-245-0113 - (AOL access x2)
1-800-716-0023 - (AOL alternate access)
1-888-296-3892 - (AT&T Worldnet accessV.90,x2)
1-800-638-1483 - (GTE Net access - V.90/K56Flex Ascend Server)
1-800-572-1959 - (Compuserve V.90,x2)
1-800-350-6885 - (Earthlink - V.90,x2)
1-800-853-7921 - (Earthlink - Flex)
1-800-534-7097 - (Earthlink - Flex)
1-800-304-4226 - (Shore.net - Flex)
1-800-320-4509 - (Ascend 56KFlex test line)
1-800-779-2966 - (Used to be MCI)
1-800-846-7562 - (Gateway BBS)
