Question about Lionel Toy Trains Smoke Pellets

1 Answer

What is lionel smoke pellet tamper used for? Why needed?

I see the wood tamper that came in some maintenance kits for Lionel locomotives that used smoke pellets. Just not sure why the tamper is needed. Revivig my dad's train and thought you just drop the pellet in the smokestack.

Yes, you do just drop the pellet in...
But if there is any kind of crud built up in the
smoke stack, it may not allow the pellet
to seat on the heating element. Thus the
tamper is included to allow you to push
the pellet all the way down. If you don't
have one, a piece of wooden dowel the right
diameter can be used.

The tamper was designed to let you push down any build up in the stack without damaging the heater windings. If you use a wooden dowel, be careful not to damage the heating element.

Lionel f7 only runs in reverse

Have you checked to see if the direction switch is on? Most Lionel locomotives can be set to run in one direction by turning the direction sequencing off. This is true for the newer electronic direction circuits and the older electromechanical E-units. Sometimes the direction units fail and the locomotive will only go in one direction or sits in neutral. If that is the case, the direction unit will need to be serviced (mechanical type) or replaced (electronic type). Go to Lionel.com for additional information and help.

What does my lionel 6110 use for smoke. Smoke pellets or fluid.

  • The Lionel 6110 Scout Engine came stock with a pellet smoke generator. Sometimes these get converted so the smoke puffs more out the front. But the way it came out of the box is pellets.

I'm not familiar with the Dash 9-44 CW but it may be that the sound and smoke switches are turned off. You will probably find these under a removable cover on top of the locomotive or under it, usually near the cab. Check your instructions or go to Lionel.com and click on support. Instructions and manuals can be found here.

Hope you got the set working. If not, look underneath the locomotive near the rear (under the "cabin"). There are two switches, one on either side. One says "Smoke", the other says "Reverse". If the "Reverse" switch was set to "Off" when the locomotive was in Neutral, it will stay in neutral even when the power is cycled or the "Direction" button is pressed on the power supply. Even in Neutral, all the lights will work and I believe the smoke element will heat up but won't puff. Whatever setting the "Reverse" switch is on, try changing it to se if that works. Hope this helps...
