Thank you for your help, appreicate! Found my belt began to shred like a piece of a rubber band, bought a new one for $10- am going to try this first. Could there be a reason for this? I do realize this is an old machine, but it works pretty good. thanks Margaret

It is so common that the washing machine can make terrible noise in many ways and is a common fault. In all occasions it is important that your observation is most important and so is vital to the identification /rectification and solution. If you have noticed that machine is vibrating when it is running then the motor /drum suspension has to be inspected. Since these fittings are located on the underside of the machine it is important that you look for the noise with a good inspection lamp. Manually turn the motor and drum and listen for the noise, if so the motor bearings, the drum agitator shaft and fittings must be checked. Also the suspensions which include the shock absorbers and springs, the body clamps must be checked to be in correct alignment and not changed in position. Tightening of the mounting is also very important. Finally in most cases a drop of OIL or smear of grease on the moving parts cane solve most issues.

You most likely have a broken coupler between the motor and gearcase.
You can buy the part for about $10 or have someone come out and replace it for about $150-200.
If you will post the complete model number from the the washer so I can see which style cabinet you have, I will try to walk you through the repair. It isn't very complicated if you are handy with home repairs.
With the age of the machine it probably just needs a coupler, but it could also have a problem in the transmission or basket drive that has caused the failure.

02 4x4 olds bravada makes loud clanging noise when turning wheel

Have your CV boots and half shafts checked. If these are cracked, they will dry out and cause a lot of noise when turning. Also check your swaybar links, these cause a lot of noise also, but not only while turning.

Very loud clanging noises started while driving

Try to remove the belt for the ac and see if you still hear the noise, as it sounds like you may have blown the seal or bearing out of the ac compressor , not sure just a guess.

How do i change an oil filter for a chrysler voyager 2000 and everytime the engine is running their is a loud clanging sound which gets louder evertime i push down on accelerator what could this problem...

remove the serpentine belt, then start the engine and listen for the noise. if the noise is gone. then you have a accessory going bad. ( i.e. ac compressor, water pump, belt tensioner, idler pulley...etc..)

Loud squeaking noise

dont spray that on the belt lol that stuff is flamable i think lol you most likely have bad phelt glides  they are pads that sit between the drum and the drum support and when that wears out it squicks or maybe you have a bad idler pulley which is what holds the belt maybe its rusty or something but most likelt its the pads
