Hi Patrick,

Are you using rechargeable Ni-Cad batteries?

If so, buy Li-ion Batteries, Ni-cads have a memory and will recharge from last charge only, rather than fully charge.

Lithium Ion Li-ion batteries don't have memory issues, and therefore will recharge fully.

These are available as rechargeable types so, look for the rechargeable types.

I hope this has been helpful.

Best regards,
Peter

I put new batteries in my Cobra 2-way radios and charged them for 24 hours. Still shows "low battery" when I turn them on.

Check your charger and battery contacts. Cleaning battery contacts on the radio and charger with a pencil eraser will remove dust, dirt, debris, and hand oil which may cause the battery to charge poorly. Secondly, you might want to check that your charger itself is working properly. If you have a second known good radio you might try charging it on the same charger.

Best regards.

Icom IC-A6 Airband radio keeps going off when trying to transmit

This is likely the result of a high current draw, ie too high for the battery capacity, which could be simple partially discharged batteries. Have you tried transmitting on low power? Does that make a difference?

It would appear from the voltage that you are using rechargeable batteries such as NiMH which have a lower full charge voltage than alkaline cells. Though I have never used the A6, I do have several Icom handhelds, amateur and marine and they work fine using the NiMH cells, though it is possible that alkalines may help--it's worth a try.

If none of the above makes a difference it would appear that something in the transmitter circuits is drawing too much current. A likely suspect (unfortunately) is the power transistor. Ouch. Good luck. Let us know what you find.

I put in a new battery and now the radio beeps when it is keyed up. I put the old battery back in and it works fine. Both batteries fully charged. Any suggestions?

A beep when keyed up can mean a low battery.
1) It is possible your new battery did not take its initial charge, it can take as many as 3 chargings to 'jump start' a new battery. You might try charging the battery an addition 2 full charge cycles.
2) Try the new battery in another SP50 radio to see if it works, or test with a volt meter, if available.
3) Double check the battery is the correct HNN9018 or equivalent NiCd battery. If you are using an after-market battery, check to see if it is a NiCd. If it is a NiMH battery you will need a fast rate charger to charge it up. (On an SP50 the fast rate charger has a blue button on the tray which needs pressed to put it in fast charge mode)
4) This may sound silly, but check to see you installed the battery the correct way. On a Motorola battery the STOP sign would not be visible when installed correctly.
5) If all these items do not solve the 'new battery' problem, you should return the battery to the place of purchase for an exchange.

Best regards.

Sounds like the main power supply may have gone bad and you are strictly running off the battery. This is why it works fine for a while when you install a new battery, that is until that battery drains and gets too low. The radio won't play because it is preserving battery life. I bet you could unplug it from the wall and would get the same results. You essentially have a battery powered clock right now. To test this theory simply remove the battery, plug the clock up and see if it comes on. My guess is it will only work with the battery installed.

Found out it was a low battery. We had charged it for several hours, but it was apparently low. It is supposed to show the low battery symbol, but it never did. We put it new AA batteries instead of the power pack and it worked just fine. Thanks

Motorola talkabout 250 beeps when the talk button is pushed

The radio has possibly been damp or wet. Take the battery pack out of the radio and allow the radio to dry, or to speed the process try using a blow dryer on a low setting.

Check your programming and be certain your large and small numbers match one another when you get ready to try the radio again.

Here is a manual which most closely matches your radio type: http://www.usersmanualguide.com/motorola/2-way_radio/t280

This sounds like a current problem which means that the batteries are not providing enough current to the PA section of the radio. It's time to replace the battery. The average lifespan of a rechargable battery is 18 to 24 months. Just because the battery shows the proper voltage does not mean that the battery is good.

TK-3202LU16P Radio

Hello ppaseka,

The Kenwood TK3202 onky supports VOX use with three specific models of Kenwood headsets: the KHS-1, KHS-21, and KHS-22. You will want to ensure that you are using one of these three headsets and that the Push-to-Talk is set to the VOX position.

Additionally the VOX function must be enabled in the radio. This can only be done by the dealer programming the radios. If the Voice Operated Transmit function was enabled by dealer who sold the radios to you then you may still need to set the VOX sensitivity level to ensure that function is sentitive enough to register the user's voice. The steps to setting the VOX sensitivity level are located on pages 20-21 of the radio's users manual which is available for download here.

Best Regards
Ken
