Could well be the needle valve leaking in the carb, or if you have been cranking the engine for some time and it has not started this will also pull fuel into the engine and blow out of the muffler, a pressure test of the carb will quickly tell you if the needle is leaking.

You haven't said how old this unit is. Older units sometimes face carbon build up in the engine and muffler. Maybe pull the muffler off and see if the exhaust port of the engine has buildup of carbon and the spark arresting screen in between them is clogged? If it is, clean it and inspect the muffler for clogging too. The muffler can be soaked in a solvent of your choice to loosen and break up carbon accumulation. Other than that, the carburetor may just need an adjustment. Many carbs dont't always function well in the climate they are used in as the initital set up of the carb is a "standard" setting that is mandated at the factory. See if you can adjust it. Here is a tutorial for a typical 2-stoke carburetor, assuming that is what this machine has.

Jiffy ice auger won't start if cold.

Hello. I'm kind of "out on a limb " here but my older chain saws and my Jiffy auger's the same. I use the highest octain fuel I can get (at the pump) and I think it helps. These old motors were made to run on real gas.

Won't start. Has compression. backfiring through

On many riding mowers there are two wires that at the bottom of the carb bowl, these wires go to a solenoid which closes a valve so gas will shut-off when the start key is turned off. When this solenoid is bad it will not close which let gas keep going to the carb so the eng will bang through the carb or muffer. Hope that this will Help. Hugh Lyon

If the engine dies when you try to speed it up chances are your muffler is the problem. Any equipment that uses a gas/oil will eventually have a stopped up muffler due to carbon buildup. This restricts the air flow and the engine won't run or open up. First take the muffler off and see if you can start and adjust the carb with it off. Turn both the air and the gas adjustment screws all the way in, then back them both out one and a quarter turns. Start from there.
Unstop the muffler by throwing it in an open fire for 10 to 15 mins or using a torch to burn the carbon out. There is a screen in the muffler that I would toss out (unless you live in California) for the only purpose it serves is catching carbon. Let the muffler cool on its own, don't cool with water or you will warp it and it won't seal right. Also while the muffler is off check the muffler port and scrape off any buildup there with a knife. Hope this helps.

Slow starting tiller

Anytime an engine uses a gas/oil mix there is a possibility that the carbon this mix produces clogs the muffler making air flow next to impossible. First check to see if it will run better without the muffler. If it does you will need to clean the muffler by removing it and burning the carbon out with a torch. If this isn't the problem, then it may by your carb. Remove it, clean well with carb cleaner, replace the diaphragm if needed for as the diaphragm gets older it becomes stiff and will not pump the gas to the engine. When you reinstall the carb, turn the adjustment screws all the way in and the one and a quarter turns out to start with, making further adjustments from there after it starts. Hopefully one of these is your solution.

Homelite zip start 2cycle trimmer.

I had this same problem, would run a couple of seconds, stop, and you couldn't start it again.
Had good gas/oil mix 50:1 and 25cc Homelite. Had replaced the fuel filter, gas, spark plug, and took carb apart and cleaned with carb cleaner and primer bulb worked fine. None of that fixed it. What did? Take the muffler off and see if it will start and run with the muffler off. If it does, chances are the muffler is clogged. Also check the exhaust ports and clean them out if plugged with black oil carbon residue.
My muffler was clogged up, took it off, cleaned out the exhaust ports, there was some oil that was in the muffler(oil that didn't burn during combustion). It now starts and runs like a champ on first or second pull.
