Dvd burner/ cd rom drive not working

At first it would open randomly when it wanted to. Then occasionally it wouldnt open if there was a dvd or cd inside and now I have tried everything and it doesnt open. I went into hardware devices and it says its connected and there are no issues but it wont open.....

on a seperate note, I've had an issue for awhile where if I was watching a dvd, if the AC adapter was hooked up to the computer, the dvd would work fine but as soon as I went to the battery, the dvd would skip. anyone have any solutions?

Sounds like a failed optical drive as it was requiring more power to operate normal. Will it even open if you try the software method (right-click on the drive in My Computer and select Eject)? You could also try manually ejecting the tray if there is a manual eject hole you can insert a straightened paperclip into. You will most likely need to replace the optical drive.

My cd drive will read cds but wont read as a burner

Not all Inspirons have CD burners (the 4 factory options were CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, and DVD/CD-RW. You can confirm that via Windows Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager and double click on DVD/CD-ROM drives to see what model drive you have, then just Google it to see what it's capable of.

In case you have either a CD-RW type drive or a DVD/ CD-RW drive and it doesn't want to burn CD's , then it's a bad drive.

DVD OR CD not drive by CD-ROM

Option One:
To fix it, open “My Computer”, or “Windows Explorer”, find the drive icon for your CD/DVD player/burner and right-click on it. When the popup menu opens, choose, “Properties”. Click on the “Auto Play” tab. Click on “Select an Action to Perform”. Click on the “Restore Defaults” button and click on the “Apply” button. Then click on “Prompt me each time to choose an action” and click on the “Apply” button again. (Note: If you want it to open in a particular program each time you put in your music CD, instead of clicking on “Prompt me…” choose the program you want it to open each time you put in your CD. Now click on “Apply” and “OK” and restart your computer. Now put in a music CD and see if it works as it should.

dvd burners or rom drive have 2 lens inside, one for DVD read, the other for cd read. I see it often where one fails out in the drive but the other works. With one working fine and the other not, I would replace the drive. If still under warranty send it to manufacturer. If not do a search on Ebay for a replacement drive, or get a local laptop repair shop to do it for you.
