Question about Garmin nuvi 200W GPS Receiver

1 Answer

We've only had this gps for a year.

And it just stopped working. Is there any one that can fix it or do you just end up buying a new one.

Hi, Welcome to FixYa! I'm the expert that has chosen your issue to solve.

Garmin will repair this unit for a flat rate repair fee of $125.00 your cost to ship it to them (they pay the shipping to return it). The good news is that when they repair it, they will load the latest software and maps. Since your unit is a year old, the maps database update will cost you around $70.00 anyway. That somewhat lessens the cost of the repair to around $55.00.

Prices on the internet, for a new unit, range wildly from a low of $100 - $280. So, if you decide to go the repair route the link is as follows:

Thanks again for using FixYa.com

P.S. - If you find that the solution/answer I provided led you to, or resulted in a fix, please close the ticket with a FixYa! rating. I would be very grateful for your show of appreciation.
If it hasn’t, please do not assign a rating just yet. Please post back as to what steps you took, results, etc, and I will try to assist you further if I am able. I am at your service.

All of a sudden, my Go 920 screen calibration is way out of sync, enough so that I can't select any buttons accurately. I have restored, reformatted, etc, but I can't even select the language...

Well, I can say this from a guy that has had several gps, in most cases Tom Tom is considered the low budget of the gps devices out there. If your lucky when you buy them and they work, feel lucky. They are considered disposable gps systems. I went through a few myself, until I ended up getting a megellian and works perfect, mor goodies, and never a problem in the last 4 years I h?ve had it. My advice, don't bother trying to fix it, because in a few months will happen again. Thanks Mike ( x truck driver)

Can i get ti fixed broken led or get new cheaper

A new screen for your GPS sells for $13-$20 on Ebay. If you feel daring enough to do it yourself, it will be cheaper to fix it yourself. Taking the GPS to one of your local electronic shops that can fix it will cost you at least $40.... but you can buy a new "refurbished" TomTom for as little as $60, depending on the model.
It's up to you what you decide to do, but if your GPS is more than a couple of years old, I'd choose to buy a new one and sell the broken one for parts on Ebay. You may get around $20 for it, then you can use that money towards buying a new GPS

Please, report back if you need further assistance

I'm not sure if you are aware but there have been recent warnings that sat navs may start to fail and will stop working all together by 2010.

Are all sat-navs going to fail in 2010? Jump to Comments
sat_nav_fail.jpg?w=300&h=200 Sat-nav systems could become defunct next year, according to a report from the U.S. Government.
It reckons a lack of investment and development into the U.S. Air Force’s GPS (Global Positioning System) will cause the failure.
But the U.S. Air Force said sat-navs will carry on working as normal. So who’s right?

I’ve been meaning to buy a sat-nav for some time due to my girlfriend’s “interesting” map-reading skills.
There’s no doubt reading a map can be more rewarding, but the convenience of using a sat-nav is a welcome one.
But recent claims from the U.S. Government’s Accountability Office (GAO) concerned me slightly. It warned the 20-year-old Navstar GPS system is in urgent need of an upgrade.
The GAO criticised the U.S. Air Force Space Command for offering the service for free, and said the lack of investment meant both military and civilian systems could be affected.
Apparently the GPS system overran its budget by £562 million and the next satellite is due to go into orbit in August 2009 – almost two years behind schedule.
“It is uncertain whether the Air Force will be able to acquire new satellites in time to maintain current GPS service without interruption,” the GAO said.
But the U.S. Air Force Space Command left a comment on Twitter declaring there is nothing to worry about.
“Be assured, the issue is not whether GPS will stop working. There’s only a small risk we will not continue to exceed our performance standard.
“Since 1995, GPS has never failed to exceed performance standards,” the U.S. Air Force Space Command said.
Drivers across the world will be affected if sat-navs fail to operate in 2010.
If the satellites do go down, a new EU sat-nav system called ‘Galileo’ could be in big demand when it goes worldwide in 2013.
Until then, I’m going to put my faith in the U.S. Air Force and take the plunge with a sat-nav.

This does worry me, because I have had simliar problems with my work's sat nav, even on clear sunny days.

Gps not working

You most likely need a firmware update. My company designs and programs GPS units and software and about 3 months ago the government changed the sats. in such a way that certain Chinese gps units stopped receiving data. Email me at justin_a_mitchell@live.com and tell me what you can about the make and model of the unit itself and I can see what I can do about getting you a firmware upgrade.

Unit will not turn on

Check for voltage at the end that plugs into the cradle. If no voltage there, check glass fuse inside end that plugs into car plug. If there is voltage at the cradle end and it still doesn't turn on then it's the cradle. The cradle fails over a short time inside the cradle plug. You can hard solder the cable end to the cradle circuit board, which is a delicate procedure which I have perfected but I am an electronics person. If you want to buy a new cradle it will fix your problem for turning on the gps but I recomend a cable tie on the cradle cable end to stop the strain on the connector so the new cradle connector will last a long time.

Will not turn on

I contacted Garmin and they had me remove the microchip inside and see if that would fix the problem. It did not. So they instructed me to send it back in for repair. They gave me a return number and then ended up replacing the unit with a new one. My unit was under a year old so it was no charge.
