I just got a Proscan LCD TV and i also got a Durabrand DVD home theater system combo (surround sound/ DVD player). the DVD player plays movies and the picture shows up fine on my tv and the sound comes out of the speakers on the surround sound. but my question is how to get the sound from my cable channels on my tv to play on the surround sound speakers.??

If the set is having outlet for speakers, you can do it. Otherwise you will have to connect the audio output from the TV to some amplifier or home theater to enjoy sound from external speakers.
judging on your brand of tv i wouldnt suggest pursuing a fix the cost could be close in comparison with a new tv if your ok with it buy a good quality dvd player to run into the tv im sure you would be happier than spending a pile of money only to end up back where you were ok hope this helps
I used a swicher box form monster I plug in my viedo games and cable tv into it and then you run the composit cable which is high def into the tv but the sound into the swicher box the swicher box sound is run into the surround sound you just hit a button and you have the sound go to wall mart has the box for 20 dollars
