SOURCE: Onkyo HT R510 is broadcasting all digital and 5.1 from the cable box as pcm

Chances are that Time Warner is just plain wrong. That's what you get with free tech supp....oh, uh right. scratch that.

Your receiver seems to be receiving a 2-channel digital audio signal (PCM) from the cable HD box. With this type of input signal, you can't select Dolby Digital on the receiver.

If you have a Scientific Atlanta 8300 (or a closely similar model):
Press [Settings] button on the remote twice. This will open the General Settings menu. Go to "Audio: Digital Out" and the select Dolby Digital (by hitting [-> Move Right]).

If you have another type of cable box, just review the settings menus until you find something relevant to digital audio out and avoid PCM, stereo or "down conversion", but look for Dolby Digital, DTS or "All".

Please keep in mind, that when connecting devices via HDMI cables, your box may decide it's smarter than you and reset the format of the digital audio back to PCM. This is some possibility of this occurring if the cable box or TV is unplugged and plugged back in.

If you have problems, add the cable box make and model and let me know.

SOURCE: Having problems with HDMI connection

Connect the HDMI outputs on your various components to the HDMI inputs on your receiver. Connect the HDMI output on the receiver to the input on your TV. HDMI incorporates digital audio, so no need to buy optical audio cables. If your receiver does not have HDMI inputs for all your components, you will need to make a choice. HDMI = Best, component video + optical audio = second best, S-video+ optical audio = third best

Goof information. Have you eliminated or proven the Onkyo as a cause by going direct to the projector? Try another Input and/or Output. It's best to know which component is broken and if it's limited to a specific subset of its function.

Settings are also indicated. Run through the video setup again. If it just stopped, what preceded it?

Yamaha RX-V595 Receiver will play Dolby Digital 3/2.1 audio Blu-Ray disc with player set to bitstream but will not play DTS-HD 3/2.1 unless output is set to PCM. Is this an issue with the Yamaha Recei

The optical connection (SPDIF) doesn't have enough bandwidth to transfer DTS-HD audio. To use DTS-HD, you must connect the blue-ray player and receiver via HDMI cable.

Each DTS-HD audio track on blue-ray includes also "normal" DTS audio, which is probably used when you select PCM. Player decodes it and sends decoded (non-HD) audio via optical cable to receiver.

In your DVD player audio setup change the digital output to bitstream. You have not mentioned which DVD player you are using.

Some players it will be given
Digital Out - Off/ On select On
Dolby Digital - Dolby / PCM select Dolby
DTS - On/Off select ON

Trying to connect my computers sound card to amp via spdif to optical in amp not working why?

The JVC audio piece of this is straightforward if your PC's soundcard is configured correctly to output the right digital bitstream. You most likely have some proprietary software managing the Sound Card and its properties. Find it and look around for something that controlls the spdif output. Usually there's a way to change the sampling-rate.

Your receiver will surely accept 44.1 khz, maybe higher for certain sources like mulitchannel DVD video. Experiment with different PC settings and play something to test it. Eventually you'll figure it out.

Of course, optical cables also need to be routed carefully to avoid small-radius bends which will cause data or signal loss.

Connecting cable to receiver

Do you mean 5 RCA audio outputs marked as FrontLeft, FrontRight, RearLeft, RearRight, Center? Unfortunately this receiver doesn't have discrete 5ch inputs (as yamaha calls it on its webpage).
But the cable box should have also digital audio SPDIF output - that is either optical (square connector) or coax (RCA usually orange). You can use this for connecting to receiver.

I just hooked up my HT-Z320 today. I had to use an optical audio cable to connect the audio output from my TV to the optical audio input in the samsung receiver (it's the only optical jack on the receiver). Then with your samsung remote in DVD/Receiver mode, click the Auxiliary button (near the top right of the remote). Hope this helps.

I plugged in my cable HDMI into my RX - V365 Yamaha reciever. and HDMI into my TV. I get video, but cannot get my attached (to reciever) speakers to play. Help

RX-V365 doesn't support HDMI audio. You need to connect the cable box also via spdif cable for audio to work. Look at the box if it uses optical spdif or coax spdif. If optical, you see that optical input on receiver is named DTV/CATV, so use also DTV HDMI for video. Coax spdif is named DVD, so in this case you will need to use DVD HDMI input.
Also you need to configure the inputs accordingly.

No sound if audio is set to realtek digital output

THe realtek Digital Output will only output sound if you have an optical cable attached. this allows you to connect your laptop a audio receiver via an optical cable. this is why you get no sound when it is set to digital output.

depends what audio outputs you have on the sky box, analogue (two phono usually red for right channel and white left channel)in which case just use phono leads to the phono inputs,Optical(toslink),connect an optical cable from the output to the optical input on the dvd channel of the pioneer, coaxial (spdif)connect to spdif input on the laser disk input of the pioneer, dont connect to the attenuated spdif. In the unlikeley event of the sky box not having any audio outputs, just use the outputs from the tv to the pioneer. The optical digital input gives the best quality on the vsa eo6
