When you boot it up after you see the main screen, I know that you can barely see but you can see something, on your keyboard there's a key that have 2 screens like this: [_]/[_], it could be by F7 or on it, well you would have to hold down the Fn ( function ) button then press on that key and it will switch from the LCD display from your laptop to a monitor from a desktop, which is the connection you have on the back of your laptop.
Well, first off, do you get a screen (external or onboard) if you boot into the bios? If you have no video whatsoever, the only thing that would start working again after time off, then stop, would be the video module went. slowly, but it went.
Main cause is overheating, caused by the heatsink/fan becoming clogged up.
What makes you think the backlight was the problem BTW? Sure it wasn't just the inverter?
Let me know if you can access bios?
Good luck

under video card, it says I have an intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME graphics controller. does that help?
My brother had the same problem with his hp. He had to have it shipped out to the hp repair facilities after notifying them, and then they repaired it. I also have a hp laptop and have not have had any issues with it yet. If your unable to afford such repairs try asking a local computer repair shop for advice.
Well depends if you have an Nvidia graphics card or an ATI graphics card. Come back and tell me which so I can help you and tell you where to go.
