You should make sure your cables work on a different PS2. You could have a bad connection somewhere in the cable. If you can you should see if you can get sound out of the optical audio port on the PS2.

Okay, are you using the original PS2? If you are then it more then likely is the age of the console. The original PS2 console actually can't play some of the games that were made after the PS2 slim was released. If your using the slim than the only thing i can advise is to try using a laser lens cleaner disc and see if that helps :)
My PS2 slim wont spin a disc unless I put pressure on the top of it. As a temporary fix I place a 10 pound ******** on top of it while the PS2 is in the horizontal position.
hello klawyer, I Think It would be a good Idea To Try and get a new power cable, but Also you should check for signs eg. If its oldish, Has the plug pard got a bit rusty, is it the wrong cable?. If none of this work, try going to your local Video Game Shop, I Recomend Game and tell them your problem.
