So called NETBOOK computers are new. This one is identified as ACER ASPIRE ONE NETBOOK with the 1.6 Ghz Atom processor, 1 GB memory, 160 hard drive, three USB, wireless lan, SD card compatible with Multimedia cards supportin , 1 gMemory Stick, 1 VGA, webcam, and ethernet & at $349).

-Do I need to install the Seagate External drive software on the Acer before installing the drive to load programs and files or will it start right up when I plug it in and the program automatically installs?

-I think you'll telling me to try the cable at both ends with the VGA connecter at both ends to see if it works?

    Thanks for your prompt reply.

There seem to be several versions of that model number 3680-XXXX. It's kind of hard to answer your questions without knowing the precise configuration of the computer you want to buy.
Take a look at just those on the first page of a Google search:
Aspire 3680-?
1. As a general comment RGB does not equal VGA although the latter contains those color lines, it also includes vertical and horizontal synchronization signals.
RGB can even vary; some versions combined sync signals with one of the color lines (usually Green for some reason) and they are separated internally then.
2. - This could be affected by changes in that sneaky -XXXX   3. It depends on both your external drive and which ports are available on the Aspire - if your drive is USB, then there shouldn't be a problem since USB ports are on any PC made in the last dozen or so years. 4. See response at 2.
You will really have to see the exact specs on the machine you are getting to answer most of your questions.

will it start right up when I plug it in and the program automatically installs?

That depends on the BIOS and operating system and you didn't mention what is installed on the one you are buying.
The BIOS (most) would automatically detect the drive and pass information to the operating system which would then install the driver(s) IF it is 'plug and play' (often called plug & pray- for good reason).

The standard VGA chassis connector is a 'D' (flattened) with 15 pin positions although some of them are often missing (not used).

There are adaptors that can match different connectors but you can't mix VGA and RGB unless the adaptor has at least five coaxial connectors, the additional two for the horizontal and vertical sync signals.

Problem is with Video Cable or laptop LCD screen.
MOST of the time it's the Video Cable.

The Video Cable connects to the motherboard, in an area under the Keyboard. It then routes up under the left Hinge, and into the Display Panel.
Inside the Display Panel it then connects to the LCD screen.

With frequent opening and closing of the netbook, the Video Cable can be pulled on. This can cause damage to the Video Cable.
(Stretched/broken wires inside the sheath of the cable)

And/or it can cause the connection at the motherboard to be loose, and/or at the LCD screen.

Example of Acer Aspire One video cable,

You can remove the Video Cable, and check it's continuity with a multimeter, or if the cost is reasonable to you simply replace it.

8 to 10 dollar video cable is not the problem? Then problem is the LCD screen itself.

My money is on a loose video cable connection, or damaged video cable.

I have an Acer one aspire but cannot link this to my HD tv, I have bought a VGA to component cable but it will not display image even though I press the FN key and F5. it works on a smaller TV via VGA to...

A VGA to Component cable is used only in special monitors - it won't work on tv's because the signal is completely different between them and the tv can't decode it: in the VGA you have an RGB signal with separate synchro while in the Component you have a Luminance signal with integrated synchro and 2 colour difference ones. So a converter is mandatory , one like

How do I connect the Acer netbook to the TV?

The only option is using the VGA port on the Aspire One to hook it up to the TV.

Your TV must have a VGA in port for your to be able to hook your computer to your TV. All you need is a regular VGA cord.

I have an acer aspire 5535-6637 and I was wondering if it is compatible with an S-Cable.. If not how can I watch things on my laptop from my TV. Thanks!

You may or may not be able to, it depends in part on your TV. The earliest interface that was compatible would be VGA but it may not be very good on resolution.
The specs for your notebook show only:
DVI Port, VGA port
The DVI (Digital Video Interface) port is available on later sets so check your user guide for either of those two and if VGA is the necessary choice, check which resolution the computer and TV share. DVI will adhere to the same standard for both.
BTW, when asking for help when interfacing devices, include model numbers for both; it saves us time and will give you a more accurate answer with fewer generalities.
