Go to printers in control panel> Right click on the printer and go to printer properties> Printer Preferences and click on color> Then click on the Estimated ink level on the top.
in run window type services.msc and in service option you will see the print spooler option just set to automatic start up type and start the service if it is stop.

1) Go to HP 1280 Support
There is a link there to detect to see if your printer has the correct driver. Click on it and see if it will install the Vista driver automatically.
2) You can download and install the driver manually by going to the same page above and click on "Download Drivers and Software". On the next page select your operating system...Vista.There is only one choice...the driver. Click on "Download". When the download window opens, select Save and save it to your Desktop. When the download is complete, run (double-click) the file on the desktop.
I had the same problem. I could print, but not scan.
However, if you open up Paint and go to file and scan, it will scan your document. For some reason, using the scan button on the printer itself will not work with Vista, but using Paint will. I also heard that using Windows fax and scan will also work.
