Question about Canon Cameras
Canon SX10 IS Lens Error-restart Camera message. Happening more and more frequently. lens also does a little dance in and out before showing this message and closing down. Sometimes it doesn't close down but remains with the lens extended and sometimes won't turn back on again.

I have the same problem. How do you restart the camera. I have pulled the battery and SD card, but can't get to a menu screen to restart to camera.

SOURCE: Canon SD 850 says lens error,
There could be a number of reasons for the lens error. ie. . sand in camera, impact damage etc. Typically the lens can be dissasembled and repaired by a competent camera repair technician. If you are certain that you did not damage the camera in any way I would send it back to canon for a warranty repair. If you however think you could have damaged it you are probably looking at around $100 to repair the camera. Hope this helps!

I had the same problem as everyone else regarding the error that would pop up stating that there was a lens error. I had the camera in my pocket when I went to a hockey game, pulled it out to take a picture, and it didn't work. Needless to say I was pissed because I expected far more from Canon. I was just about to go and buy a new camera, and figured that I would try to troubleshoot the problem and stumbled upon this site. Someone suggested turning the camera on and off while twisting the lens, so I figured it couldn't hurt to try it.
Before trying this, my lens would not retract all the way, the cover would not shut, the image was blurry, and I could not zoom in at all or the camera would show the error.
So, I tried the "twisting" solution, and it wasn't working, but I think I was being too delicate with it. I put a little more pressure on it and gave it a good twist. There was a clicking noise as others have said, but in the end, it worked after about 2 or 3 minutes of messing with it. No my lens goes down, the cover shuts and its clear as a bell. Not sure if this is a recurring problem as it appears to be a common problem, I fully suggest trying this before you send it off to get it fixed for a ridiculous amount of money.
Best of luck

SOURCE: Lens error, restart camera
Lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. The lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned.
Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal.
More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.

If the lens does not extend/retract when the camera is powered on, then lens assembly is damaged.
Unfortunately, such Canon SX100 (and the SX110 too) has a very fragile lens assembly, and it's damaged very easily. Most of the times the internal gears, the plastic post guides and the motor are damaged at the same time, so the only solution is to replace the whole lens assembly.
The lens replacement requires a qualified camera repair technician, unless you want to try in repair it yourself, which requires tools (scredrivers, soldering iron, desoldering tool, magnifier glass with light, etc).
