GE P7 Wall oven had bad thermostat????

Hello in Appliance land. We have a 1960's GE p7 wall oven that has lately been taking 3+ hours to cook a small roast (a 1.5 hour job). 325 degrees just seems barely warm. Is this a heating element problem or a thermostat problem? The big problem - my reliable old heating guy passed away last spring, so I'll need to do this on my own. Thanks.

It probably is not your element. It is more than likely your thermostat with probe. The probe refers to the small copper tube inside your oven. It leads up to the dial where you select your heat setting, or your thermostat. These are very easy to replace, as long as you can pull the unit out of the wall. Just be sure to replace the wires from the old one wire-for-wire, or draw a picture of it before you start pulling wires. Let me know how things go.

How can I check thermostste on GE P7 before buying new one

wow much to high to pay? it can be checked for continuity with an ohm meter. u can buy cheap meters for like 5 bucks or so. are u sure their trying to charge them much for a thermostat? maybe they thought u meant something else? if its getting way to hot u have a bad oven sensor? it to can be checked with a meter. When ur thermostat goes out due to overheating , the oven will not operate. thermal thermostats are not resettable. oven sensor is located near the back along the wall it thin and may have a glass look?

What year was the ge p7 wall oven manufactured? trying to find out the age of the oven.

I can go back to 1974-5 for mine, that's when my original Landlord bought the place and it still has the same GE P7 as when the complex was new...and it still works.

GE P7 Oven

I, too, have lost my manual and none of the timers work. I can never remember how long to run the clean cycle for, but will turn it off as it has been a little over 2hours and your post mentions 1.5hours.
I initiate the cleaning cycle by completing steps mentioned above and then turning the top dial (which has a clean range on it) clockwise until the clean light comes on. I then just time it by my watch to turn it all off. Then I wait a couple of hours before attempting to open the door. Don't forget to take the racks out, they are not suppose to go through the Clean cycle.
Good Luck,
