Question about Netopia 3346N-VGx Router (3346NVGX)

1 Answer

Bridging I have a Netgear Router WGR614. I have set up an IP based camera system. The ports needed for them begin at 50050 and go up in order to get the cameras online. The ports available for the Netopia end in the 49000's. Therefore, I need to put the Netopia into bridge mode and assign ip addresses. What steps do I take and, how does this get accomplished?

First you need to call your ISP to help you bridge the modem. After bridging, follow this steps;

Port Forwarding

A. Determining the IP Address and MAC Address of a Computer:

Note: Please use the computer for which the Ports are to be opened:

For Windows 2000/XP users:

1. Please click on Start and select Run.
2. Type in cmd and click on OK.
3. In the Command Prompt, please type ipconfig/all then press Enter or Return key.
4. Please make sure that the Ethernet adapter has an IP Address that is the same range as the router (e.g. 192.168.1.2 for the computer and 192.168.1.1 for the router).
5. Please note down the IP address and Physical address.

B. Reserving an IP Address:

1. Please open any web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
2. Connect to the router by typing http://routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm or http://192.168.1.1 in the address field and click Enter or Return key.
3. A window will prompt for a user name and password. The default username is "admin" and the default password is "password".

Note: If it does not take password as the password, you might have changed it when you have run the NETGEAR Setup CD so please try other passwords. If you cannot remember the password, you need to reset the router and run the Setup CD to reconfigure it.

4. When the setup page opens, click on LAN IP Setup under Advanced tab.
5. Click on Add under Address Reservation.
6. Under Address Reservation window, please select the radio button of the computer you wish to add from the Address Reservation Table.
7. If the computer you want is not on the list, please click on the Refresh button to update the table.
8. If the computer is still not on the Address Reservation Table, please type in the IP Address, MAC Address (Physical Address), and Device Name of the computer you wish to add.
9. Click the Add button when done.

C. Opening Pre-Defined Ports for Internet Services:

1. Click on the option with the name Port Forwarding/Port Triggering under the Advanced menu.
2. Please select the service type Port Forwarding. The router pre-defined services are listed there.
3. From the Service Name pull down list, select the service that needs to be hosted.
4. Enter the IP address of the computer in the Server IP Address box.
5. Click the Add or Apply button.
6. Repeat all steps to open more ports.

Note: If the name of the Internet service does not appear in the drop down list, you may manually open the ports for that Internet service. Please follow the steps below:

D. Opening Ports for Games, Applications or Custom Ports:

1. Click on Add Custom Service button.
2. Type the service name in the Service Name box and the lower range numbers in the Starting Port box.
3. If the application uses only a single port; type in the same port number in the Ending Port box.
4. If the application uses a range of ports; type in the higher range numbers in the Ending Port box.
5. Type the IP address of the computer in the Server IP Address box. Click Apply button.
6. It will then refresh to the Port Forwarding page, and will show the list of all ports opened in tabulation.
7. Repeat all steps to add more ports for more services.

E. To Edit or Delete a Service Entry:

1. Click on the Radio Button that needs to be Edited /Deleted, under the Port Forwarding page.
2. Modify the information from the Service Name, Starting Port, Ending Port, and the Server IP Address, and then click the Apply button.

How do you get the Toshiba BDX2700 blu ray player reset to a NetGear WGR614 router with a different IP address when the router doesn't have a button?

That router uses a browser-based interface, so you can simply log on and set it up from any nearby PC.
The Netgear manual can be found here and the Toshiba manual here. Page 28 shows the network setup.

I gave my netgear router WGr614 to my daughter she is not able to connect to the internet. my security code is my old phone number would that make a difference?

How does she connect to the internet on the other PC? If a cable or ADSL modem is used then this needs to be connected to the WAN port of the router. Other wired systems need then to connect to the routers LAN ports. The wireless connections sound like they are already working connecting ok. Any trouble that might come after connecting in this fashion might come because the router is set to a fixed IP. Router needs to be set to connect via dynamic DCHP option.

Trying to connect to remote camera. I go to a wifi spot and can connect. I try from my home and can't connect. What setting needs to be changed?

You cannot get to the outside of your router from inside the network. Use the internal IP address instead.

For instance:

Lets say you use http://camera.mydomain.com:8080 to get to the camera.

That URL points to your router which has some IP address. eg 80.180.23.234

You router forwards the request on port 8080 to the internal IP address of your camera eg. 192.168.1.45 an it is this address that you need to connect when inside the LAN.

Your need to replace the details above with those specific to your setup.

I am given a set up error while trying to configure netgear WGR614. Below is the message The router is setup with the static IP values read from the computer. However, there is no Internet connection with...

You need to contact your Internet Service Provider to obtain the setup configuration for the cable or DSL modem. A LAN cable is then connected from the modem to the Internet LAN port on the wireless router.
Normally you do not set a static IP address on the router, and the wireless card should be set to obtain an IP address automatically.
If you still have problems, give me details of what configuration steps you have carried out on the router and the wireless card together with the error messages.

Netgear WGR614 v6 I would like to host Nascar races & need to open TCP Port 8590 to allow this to happen . Can anyone help me ? Thanks Lenny

You need about 3 pieces of information to make this work; the machine that's going to serve's IP address, the password to your router, and a machine on the network.

You can let the serving machine obtain an IP address automatically, but if it changes you will have to reset your server IP address all the time. So, for fun, give it an address in your IP range, generally 192.168.1.x. Pick a number like maybe 250. Then, log into your Netgear (192.168.1.1) and use admin and the password to get to the router web page. On the left tab, go to port forwarding, create a new custom service, and put in 8590 and the IP address of the server.

Once you apply it, it will show up in the table and you'll see what port, a name, and the internal IP address 8590 goes to.
