Try starting in safe mode (F8 when you turn it on)
see how long it stays on
try going into your Bios (del, or F1, or F2) and see how long it stays on

if you are in the bios and it turns itself off, you have a hardware problem (such as motherboard, processor...etc)

Hi! When I shut my computer down the lights do not

When you shut off your PC do you:
1) Give it enough time (could take from 1 minute to 10 minutes) to shut down completely (easy sign is if the fun continues to run or lights are on)?

2) Clicked Hibernate or Sleep OR closed your laptop screen before it completely finished shutting down (this could put the PC to sleep and it would remain on, so the lights would remain on, until you woke it by moving a mouse, flipping the screen back and forth for a bit or pressing the start button (not holding))?

3) Have it plugged in (depending on the model, a light might stay on if it is charging even if it is not on(probably not this one since you said it turns off after a Hard shutdown (don't do this since this damages your computer and will make it break down after continued use)))

Laptop wont boot up, black screen, has power

You didn't post the Make, Model of Laptop or the OS you are using. I'll use a Win 7 solution. Boot the Laptop, open the Control Panel, select Power Options, set to High Performance, select Change Plan Settings, set SLEEP to Never, select Change Advanced Power settings, go through the settings , set SLEEP and Hibernate to Never, Power buttons and Lid to shut down. Always shut down and unplug your laptop when not in use to prevent damage from power surges and possible Fire hazard IF the battery malfunctions. A reboot every day will reset the computer.

Dell lattitude d620 won't factory restore ?

Hi,

Please go through the below step, you can able to do it.

1) Shut down the Dell Latitude D620 if it's currently powered on. Click "Start" in the left-hand corner of the screen to access Windows' shut down options. Alternatively, press and hold the Latitude's power button, located on the top edge of the laptop's keyboard.

2) Turn on the computer by pressing the laptop's power button.

3) Press and hold "F8" on the top of the laptop's keyboard immediately after turning the computer on. If the Windows logo appears on the screen, you're too late and must repeat Steps 1 through 3 again. If you pressed it in time, a list of text options will appear on the screen.

4) Use your keyboard's arrow keys to scroll down to "Repair Your Computer." Push the "Enter" key on your keyboard.

5) Choose a language from the next list and select "Next." If you've password-protected your laptop, you will be prompted to enter your user name and password at this time.

6) Press "Dell Factory Image Restore." A new window will appear. Click "Next" and select the option for reformatting the hard drive and restoring the factory condition of the laptop.

Remove the battery and leave off for about 1 minute. Put the battery back in place and press the power button to turn the unit on. immediately after you see system light come on, press and hold the power button and see if it shuts off after a few seconds. If not, then its likely your motherboard is defective.

My laptop will not start after BIOS update pushed to me by HP Healthcheck.HP will not fix and expects me to replace PC or pay $399 for new board. Hewlett-Packard needs to be accountable for pushing a...

I had exactly the same problem last night. HP's 'Health Check' recommended that I flash the BIOS of our new HP Dv7-1175. Had the computer about 3 days, and was receiving some strange errors reporting unrecogized USB devices not recognized and a buggy USB driver. So, OK, Flash the BIOS.

Precisely the same thing occurred. The utility for flashing the BIOS ran, seemed to work, shut down the computer. Then nothing.

I restarted to a backlit screen, no POST or BOOT. Here's how I solved the problem (though I can't tell you why it worked, other than it obviously reset the CMOS).

1) Turned off the computer

2) Removed Battery and disconnected power cord.

3) Waited, pensively, for 5ish minutes (read several places to wait for 20 minutes; I didn't)

4) Plugged the power cord back in (I did NOT reinsert the battery)

5) Holding down the Insert/Scroll button, I held the power button down for 20-30 seconds. Nothing happened until I released the power button. When I released the power button (still holding the Insert/Scroll button depressed), the computer came up and Windows booted. Could not, at that point, get ESC pressed; wouldn't let me into the BIOS.

6) Restarted and prayed, came up normally; opened the BIOS by hitting ESC at the proper time, reset to defaults (just to be sure).

The computer has seemed to work operate normally since, though for the life of me, I can't tell you why this worked. I was, for the record, trying to press the Insert button, so if yours has these separated-- as my Toshiba does-- then I'd start with that.

Hope this helps someone.

My acer aspire ones screen is just staying black and wont reboot what do i do ?

I have the same problem! I received a response to my email telling me to disconnect adapter and battery, hold the power button 30 minutes, connect ac (make sure it's plugged), turn on, wait 1-7 minutes, then attach battery after windows boots. After several tries, it still hasn't worked. When I turn on the system, my power led stays green, but the hdd indicator is not lit. My battery can still recharge, but the screen is still black, and there is no sound.

Screen went black

When you close the lid, there is a small pin that engages the case and flips a switch to tell the laptop the case has been closed. The monitor will ALWAYS turn off then, because otherwise, the heat build up would burn the screen! Do not try to defeat this, replacing an LCD screen is usually more expensive than the value of the laptop!

Now, that all being said (and please remember), the situation you have now is (hopefully) just that the laptop tried/succeeded in going into ACPI "suspend" or "hibernate" mode.

1. Remove all cables and 10/100. Remove all USB devices. Just leave the PSU (AC power supply) connected.

2. Press the power button firmly, JUST once. Wait. And I mean WAIT, because some laptops can take 2 minutes or more to come out of suspend/hibernate, if they were very busy at the time it was shut down.

3. If the LCD screen lights up. you are done. But if it does not light up now, then proceed to step 4.

4. Press and HOLD the power button down for 10 seconds. This forces the laptop to shut down completely, even from suspend/hibernation. Some unsaved files may be lost, but tghe laptop goes cold, so you can start ACPI over again.

5. After a few minutes, press the power button again, firmly, just ONCE and for 1 second max. Laptop should start up OK.

6. Once it starts up, go to START MENU/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL/POWER SETTINGS and search for the "hibernation" tab. Turn hibernation OFF. your laptop obviously has some problems or lack of responsiveness with hibernation (most do). Use suspend, instead. It is much safer,. faster, and still does a good job of saving HDD and LCD wear. Please let me know how this goes for you, there are other more detailed problems that may be involved here, but I suspect this is most likely.
