I've had my PSP since December 20. of 2008, so it's brand new, bought it from Wal-Mart. I have been playing games on it for awhile and now they won't work whatsoever. The disc doesn't even make a noise when I put it in, so it seems like it cannot detect that the UMD is in there. So I was wondering if there was a solution, or if I have to exchange this back in due to warranty and obtain a new one?
I think a friend of mine had a similar problem. I heard there was a little magnetic plate (which serves for reading the UMD), that has fallen off the system. It might not be your problem though. Try with the warranty.

Below where the UMD game appears on screen try the button below that should say 'Update PSP'. The game could have an update for the PSP and won't play without it. If this doesn't work contact Sony Website Forums and see if anybody there has had the problem.

- Your UMD drive tray may be bent.
- There may be a foreign object in your UMD drive
* disks fail to load
* extremely slow loading
* strange whirring noise when trying to read disks

..bring it back to 'Gamestop' & tell them truthfully that the PSP you bought doesn't play UMDs.
.. maybe there're problem's with the UMDs? Are they pre-owned?
If the PSP is brand new when you bought it, you can claim for FREE repairs, or perhaps a replacement from SONY! Mostly warrantys are just 1yr period, so you better 'do what you have to do' before Christmas!
When you insert a UMD into the PSP, then what happens? What appears on the screen?
- Do you hear the UMD drive spinning for quite awhile, but not loading up under the Game column?
you,ve damaged the UMD Drive, or Laser.
hence disk read errors.
you,ll have to obtain a replacement UMD Drive ( e-bay )
Or alternatively you could look into firmware flashing and pandoras Battery.
This way you can play games from a memory stick.

alright turn off your psp by holding down the power switch for atleast five seconds. when it is turned off hold down the right trigger (the R1 button) then at the same time hold down the power switch button to get to the recovery menu. after that go to configuration then somewhere amongst all of the displayed lines one of them should either say no umd or umd required toward the end of the text. if it says umd required change it to where it says no umd. then go back and go to advance then advance configuration and disable all and this should solve your problem. hope i helped.
Can you run other UMD's and it read them? If so you need to possibly clean the Original UMD. If your not able to read any UmDs, or it will see the UMD and not load it up and run the UMD, you will need a new UMD drive. I can replace your UMD drive for $45 including return shipping.
