Install the hard drive into an USB hard drive adapter case the plug this USB hard drive into the USB port in your laptop. The laptop will see it as an external storage device, open the various folders and copy the files to your laptop. You can delete any unwanted files off this external USB hard disk and use it for backups and file transfer.
Look for a grid of gold-coloured pins between the power-connector and the data-connector.
Look CLOSELY at the engraving on the top of the disk-drive, near those pins,
looking for 'MA(ster)' or 'SL(ave)' or 'C(able)S(elect)'.
Or, especially for MAXTOR drives, read the text printed on the label on the top of the disk,
for the "pairs" of pins that need to be set.
try doing a F disk on the hard drive first then format it and make it the active drive and then try installing the xp software. if it has had another operating system say for instance windows ME it will not install on that drive without removing it. You can also go to www.maxtor.com and download their free hard drive tools to see if there is a problem that thier software can fix. the software is for free.
This web page shows the jumper settings you require. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/images/support/en/us/mxo_ata_jumpers_rev.jpg&imgrefurl=http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php%3Ft%3D387061&usg=__oBf6Czrk9E5_4ovUuuyxJCl68fY=&h=411&w=850&sz=83&hl=en&start=3&itbs=1&tbnid=J_I6lp0cCbuIwM:&tbnh=70&tbnw=145&prev=/images%3Fq%3DJumper%2Bsettings%2Bold%2BMaxtor%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG
Maxtor were taken over by seagate some time ago - try downloading and running the Seagate diagnostic tools "SeaTools"

Forgot to say, its 120gb ATA/133 HDD
Thanks a lot Ralph. Will one of these also deal with powering the drive.
