Does the 98 Ford F-150 5.4 triton have two coolant sending units? I found the one on the intake and replaced it and still no gauge.


Has CHT - cylinder head temp. sensor . This sensor is a input to the PCM - engine computer . The PCM sends engine temp info on serial data network to the instrument cluster . I/C has a microprocessor inside . Have it check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes . Not OBD2 codes , B - body codes . The gauge could be the problem , which means replacing the instrument cluster .
Engine coolant temperature information is received by the instrument cluster from the PCM over the SCP network. Temperatures over 121°C (275°F) will display hot (H). If the engine coolant temperature data is missing or invalid for five seconds, the instrument cluster will move the engine coolant temperature gauge below the cold (C) position.
The best way to diagnose this is with a scan tool , factory or a professional type . Know how the system works and not replacing parts is the proper way to diagnose .

  • A single gauge does not return to zero with the ignition switch off
  • Instrument cluster.
  • INSTALL a new instrument cluster; REFER to Instrument Cluster . TEST the system for normal operation.

  • Incorrect temperature gauge indication
  • Circuitry.
  • Instrument cluster.
  • PCM.
  • Engine coolant temperature sensor.
  • GO to Pinpoint Test F .

I should also point out that if the temp sensor were bad the vehicle may not run right .
Using the factory scan tool
Trigger instrument cluster active command ENGCOOLNT. Monitor the engine coolant temperature gauge while adjusting the ENGCOOLNT active command to read 50% and 100%.
  • Does the temperature gauge start at cold, move to half at 50%, and full hot at 100%?
Yes REFER to the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual.

No INSTALL a new instrument cluster; REFER to Instrument Cluster . REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop !

Temperature gauge not showing any temperature


The sensor has nothing to do with the temperature gauge. That is controlled by a sender unit (1 wire) that changes the electrical resistance to current passing through the gauge. Remove the wire from the sender unit and earth it out. and if you have power through the gauge it will immediately go to hot. IF it does then replace the sender unit.

I replace the temperature sensor and now my gauge is not working why


The temperature sensor has nothing to do with the temperature gauge . The temp sensor controls the fan operation and the CPU operations while the temp gauge sender unit is a heat controlled resistor that alters the voltage through the gauge. check that you have replace the wires on the correct unit .

Engine coolant Temperature gauge fluctuates


Watch the temp gauge when the electric radiator fans come on. The temp sensor that controls when the fan comes on may be faulty.

After disconnect and reconnect the battery of my opel antara, the indication of odometer displays only 888... for all indications. How can i reset it?

Instrument cluster consists of electronic analog gauges, various warning lights, and optional tachometer. Vehicles equipped with tachometer have an electronic vacuum fluorescent transmission range indicator (PRND3L),odometer and trip odometer display. Vehicles without tachometer are equipped with a cable-operated transmission range indicator.
Instrument cluster is equipped with the following warning lights:
Battery voltage.
Cruise (speed control).
Door ajar.
Fasten seat belt.
Lift gate ajar.
Low fuel level.
Low windshield and washer level.
Traction Control.
The Body Control Module (BCM), which receives input from various sensors, sends display information to instrument cluster and operates gauges. Instrument cluster incorporates a self-test diagnostic feature to identify electronic problems. BCM, Powertrain Control Module (PCM), and Transmission Control Module (TCM) are continuously monitored by the diagnostic system.

My display numbers are upside down.


If this unit has worked before, and suddenly looks upside down, you are most likely seeing a display with missing or defective sigments. There are 7 segments needed to make number from 0 to 9. When a segment goes bad, you will see something different.
Sometimes the internal connections to the LCD display are dirty or corroded.

Temperature Guage, '89 Camry


the cable going from the gauge to the sender unit is an earth return. if you take it off the sender unit wire if the gauge does read hot the sender and earth it out the gauge should go to the hot segment.dont leave this cable to earth very long do it quickly. if the gauge does read it is ok, there is no earth to the petrol tank. if it does not read it will be faulty. hope this helps.

2003 F-250 instrument cluster...


it sounds like you are getting a surge of voltage from your alternator/generator. Very strange.

the dealer can run a diagnostic test & pull fault codes or you can try this. If this helps, please report back & rate as fixya. Thanks. I am curious what you find as root cause. Good luck.

Instrument Cluster Self-Diagnostic Mode
To enter the instrument cluster self diagnostic mode with the engine off, depress and hold the odometer reset button. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position and hold until the gauges sweep (within five to eight seconds). Depress the reset button once to advance to each stage of the self-test.
Turn the ignition to the OFF position to exit the instrument cluster self-diagnostic mode. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, proceed to the Symptom Chart to continue diagnostics.


Instrument Cluster Self-Diagnostic Mode Odometer display Description GAGE Carries out gauge sweep of all gauges, then displays the present gauge values. Also carries out the check sum test on ROM and EEPROM. All segments illuminated. Illuminates all odometer segments. bulb Illuminates all micro-controlled lamps and LEDs. r #### Returns to normal operation of all micro-controlled lamps and LEDs and displays hexadecimal value for ROM level (used when requesting assistance from the hotline). nr#### Displays hexidecimal ROM level and type as stored in non-volatile memory (NVM).
