Question about GE (PSS26MSRSS) Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

I have a GE side by side refrigerator, model TFX26KRDA, serial LZ245571. For the past few weeks I have noticed an ice buildup on the back panel of my freezer section. Also the freezer isn't super cold and the refrigerator isn't cold enough to use. I have been keeping my milk, yogurt and stuff in freezer and they stay cold but don't freeze. Anyway, I took the back off the frig and the little panel in front and vacuumed everything to see if that would help. I had both settings on 5 which is where they were set when I first got the thing. Anyway, nothing changed except more ice in freezer panel. So today I used a hair dryer and melted all the ice on the back panel and removed the panel and now I see the silver brush like coils are solid ice. I am still trying to get it to defrost. What should I check and in what order. Thanks for your help?

I do have the identical problem. The refrigerator is less than 5 years old. It was preceded by a very odd motor sound. It sounded like the motor was stopping and starting. How do I get to this freezer panel to look at these things you're looking at

While you have the freezer panel out look at the defrost heaters to see if they are burnt up, there may be 2 heaters on a GE they look like glass tubes with a spring running through them on e at the very bottom and another about halfway up. a good heater will be faily clear a bad heater will look greyish and burnt on the inside. this is most common issue for ge defrost problems. if both heaters look ok. need to check the defrost sensor its mounted to the top of the coil it will have an orange and I think brown wire going to it it is a round disc looking piece. not sure if you have a multimeter if you do check it on ohms and yo should read infinity as long as the sensor is still frozen.
now if both of those check good then only thing left is bad defrost control which means replacing the motherboard loated on the back of your refrig.
shoot me a message if you have anymore questions.. thx peyton

My GE GDSS6KKXASS French Door refrigerator has frost/ice buildup on the back panel of the fridge, and it is especially bad around the holes in the panel. I can't tell where the water/moisture is coming...

The door seal is leaking. The air that circulates thru the fridge is where the moisture is coming from. Since it has to run more often to keep it at the right temp, the ice forms on the back. Replace the seal and the ice will disappear.

The problem you describe is that your defrost circuit has failed. The fridge should stop the compressor periodically and turn on the defrost heater to melt the frost buildup. Since the frost in building up on your coils, the fan can't blow the cold air into the fridge compartment. It defrost is controlled by a module that turns on the heater. Most of these failures have to do with the defrost heating element burning out. It can be replaced by someone who has some mechanical ability.

The coil and heater is located in the back of the freezer compartment behind the panel in the back. You can obtain parts from appliance repair outlet or online like appliancepartspros.com or repairclinic.com.

Freezer is not working. Ice maker is working. Started noticing the past 2 weeks that ice cream is melting. Refrigerator is working but not keeping things really cold. The unit is only 3 years old.

ice mker will soon quit as when ice cream is soft the tempt is rising . look for frost build up in back wall of freezer . if so the heaters have failed ( very common ) . they will have to be replaced . there is a new style that replaces mose G E heaters . and they are much better .. mm

Icemaker leaking

Check two things.

1: see if you have ice buildup in the water inlet tube above ice maker, if you do chance are the water valve is bad, if not,

2: see if you have icicles hanging from bottom of ice maker, if you do you have a bad ice maker.

Either way, will need full model number and serial number both to get you the right part numbers for parts.

So the dispenser is getting water. Try swapping the wires on the dual water inlet valve. Then try the water dispenser. The water should go to the ice maker. This will tell you weather or not the ice maker valve is working and if the line is clear.

If the valves clicks but water doesn't get to ice maker the fill tube can be stopped up with ice.The water inlet valve on the back of the unit where the water supply comes in can have a slow leak and will cause ice to buildup and block the fill tube. Disconnect the ice maker line from the valve and watch to see if it has a slow drip. It doesn’t take much to eventually block the fill tube.

The unit isnt defrosting hence the ice on the back panel. Either your bimetal thermostat is open or the heating element is shot. Most GEs they come together so happy hunting. Those parts are behind the frosting panel
