SOUND BUT NO PICTURE

TV COMES ON WITH SOUND BUT NO PICTURE, AND THERE IS LIGHT IN THE SCREEN, AS IF THE BACK LIGHT WAS WORKING Picture comes on for about 3 seconds, then screen goes blank. Sound is fine, just no picture. Back light is supposed to last 50,000 hours. Doubt they will cover it, anyone know proper tools to replace it myself?

I had the same problem in October with a 7 month old unit and I sent it to El Paso for repair under warranty...they decided it could no be repaired and I got the first replacement Thanksgiving, but it was cracked, so it got sent back and mid January I got another replacement. This one works OK, but it turns itself on every morning at 8 am. I have reset it to factory settings, but it still does it, so based on experience, I will put it on a power strip and dump power to it to turn it off between uses (being used as extra TV in bedroom)....good luck...

I didn't come here to get such a generic and completely unhelpful response. That is hardly a solution I would need to ask for. I see you responded to someone else with the same problem by copy-paste. Really classy there. Anyway, I am not responding to bash your "solutions" what I am looking for is for someone familiar with LCDs to tell me what part I will need to replace and if there are toolkits to replace said parts. There is a very specific tool my TV needs to open it up, one I do not have. I don't go to repair shops without knowing exactly what I want done, as that way there is less chance of being roped into further repairs and charges. If anyone can provide this information, it would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem today with the same symptoms. I tried a power reset, removing the cables, checked all inputs and got the same symptoms.

I found a temporary fix. When I turned the TV on, I immediately press the backlight but on the remote until the bar appears then lower the setting down to 10. This may take a couple of tries of powering the TV off/on. Once I got the setting lowered to 10, the picture stayed on. If you invoke any of the presets it will change this setting. I'm going to call someone and try to get more information on a permanent fix.

I hope this helps, at least I got the picture back.

I had this problem on my 42" Philips. Just got it yesterday and worked fine on the tv stand. As soon as I mounted the TV to the wall via wall mount system, I had the exact same issue you did. Figured it out today.

The wall mount was putting pressure against the center of the back of the tv (tv set had a slightly rounded back plate, and the mount was a flat plate). As soon as I put spacers (part of the wall mount hardware set) between the wall mount braket and the tv so there was no contact except at the mounting holes, the tv worked fine.

My theory is the pressure pushed the tv back plate against some board components which caused them to overheat (no air flow); or put pressure on internal connectors. I dont know.

Hope this helps, may not apply to your situation.

You almost certainly are between a rock and a hard place. If you have to come here to ask this question (and no offense is intended or implied), you probably won't be able to do anything to repair the unit yourself. What you can do is call around to some local shops and describe the problem and see what kind of repair costs you might incur having it repaired.

Had the same problem. Bought a Westinghouse 56.04073.011 Power Supply / Backlight Inverter for my Westinghouse SK-32H540S from Shopjimmy for $82-00 http://www.shopjimmy.com/westinghouse-56... Pulled the black cover off the TV. Then I loosened the 6 little screws that holds the board, plus I unplugged the little plugs, screwed the new board in place, reinserted the plugs, closed the back panel, reconnected the TV and WALLAH.... it works perfectly. It took me all of 10 minutes

Picture freezes, sound continues for 5-10 seconds. tv shuts off and comes back on after 5-10 seconds. problems reoccurs with increasing frequency.

In these cases you might be able to see a picture by shining a bright light right next to the screen front. Do not put the light there for very long or you will end up with a permanent bright spot burt onto the screen. I have discovered that applying light pressure with a 3/8" thick rubber or plastic shim corrects a panel inverter/driver board/card solder problem with many flat panel TVs. (Removing the TV back is required, try light pressure against the inverter board while wearing rubber gloves and tv is then powered on.)

If the power supply outputs are good! Then I would say the back light inverter is bad! If the screen stays black and does not come on.
