Sounds like a large file was sent to the printer that was in a format, or, version unrecognized by the software. Go into the print queue and check to see if other files are waiting to be printed, cancel and delete them out. Next, try sending a one page doc of a current version of the software to the printer to see what happens. This is NOT a hardware problem, it's an incompatibility problem that CAN be fixed by simply using a more current version of the software.
First of all, I checked the answers given here, but nothing worked; everytime I turned on the unit, the red light flashed that the printer was out of paper.
From the Brother's HL-2070 manual, in the troubleshooting section: take out the toner cartridge from the front of the machine (be careful, any black toner powder that come off may be very difficult to clean up). I took the toner cartridge to the sink.
There is a blue slide along the top of the unit that will clean the corona wire if you slide it back and forth, from one end to the other (toner/dust can become caked on the wire over time; sliding the slider back and forth simply knocks the caked off 'stuff' off of the wire).
Replace the toner cartridge; it worked fine for me. I was immediately able to print.
It is most likly not linked to word. Word is likly sending the prints to the wrong, obsloete or wrong copy of the printer.
When printing check to see where the doc is being sent to print.
Then go to printers to see which printer is your 2140 active and ofcourse do a test print. If the test print is good this is the correct link to your printer.
