Novatron 220 light set

The value of older studio equipment is very dependant on demand. You can get an idea from ebay and if listed craigs list, or some f the big NY houses that sell used equipment. 40 to 60% of new value is a starting point depending upon age and condition. The newer, better it looks the closer to retail you should be able to get - if people are willing to pay it.

Need help in operatingthis pack

You would be best served if you bought and optical slave trigger or a radio trigger for that camera. If the Novatron unit is old enough, the voltage may be too high to use with the Nikon D40. Once you have a trigger, the camera can be used in the Manual mode like your F3HP. the synch would be 1/60th and you set the camera aperture through the control dial.

Do not put the camera in P mode, it must be in M. Also some of the old Novatron units have a polarity issue. If the Camera cannot fire the Novatron, that the plug out of the Novatron in turn it 180 degrees then plug it in again. Sometime on older units this fixes the problem because the voltage polarity is not matched.

Cost of purchasing an old Novatron 60-240-2C

The retail price of the novatron 240 "fun kit" (the one in the hard case) was $737.00 in 2003. Your mileage may vary.

Recent prices I've seen for "as is" used units are about $100 USD. Rental prices for these units are about $30 a day.

Camera and flash gun trigger voltage

Hi Syd,
Vivitar 2800 and 2800D are two different flashes. The first is an old flash, having high trigger voltage, which, as you will see, still can be used with your Fuji. The second is a member of modern flashes, having a low-voltage release. Manufacturers specify the highest applicable voltage at the trigger (hotshoe or PC) terminal; at most digital cameras it reaches several hundred volts.I believe, this is, what your seller was asking. As far as I know, Fuji doesn't mention this value in the user manual of the Finepix 9500, but I met reports of people, who called Fuji and asked that and the answer was 400 volts!
So the short answer is: buy any wireless trigger if you have the 2800D, and tell the seller the flash has about 200 volts if your flash is an older 2800.
I wonder if you did already use your flash with your Fuji?

Syncing Nikon D300 with 600VR strobe system

A wireless system such as the line of Pocket Wizards is a good choice- the are builr to professional standards and are very reliable.

If you wish to hard wire your flash unit to your digital camera, you can purchase a protector wivh reduces the trigger voltage to a safe level refatdless of the age or design of the flasg system you are goinf to use, Under no circumstances should you use this combunation of equipment without a radio triggering device or the protector, The protector attache to the hot shoe of the camera and provides a standard PC synch cord terminal for connecting your flash system to the camera.

You can test the voltage by putting a volt meter set a 250 or 500 VDC across the synch socket in the flasg unit, If the meter deflects negatively just revers the polaity for a correct reading. If there is under 5 volts there is ptobably no issue, however, I still would take no chasces abd use a radio or a protector. If the falsh won't fire with the radio or protector in place, tha probably means tha the synch voltage is very low.

Novatron 240 Flash Kit

First you need to isolate the problem by doing some troubleshooting.
1) try a known good sync cord to determine if the problem is the sync cord and not the power pack.
2) try a known good sync cord with a known good camera to determine that the problem is not in the camera.
3) try your camera with a different power pack to confirm your camera is triggering the power pack OK.
These steps will isolate the source of the problem.

Contacts voltage

Originally the 45CT1 had high trigger voltage. In the production period Metz improved it to a much lower voltage release circuit. Metz homepage (metz.de) holds the information, from which serial number on have 45-CT1s low trigger voltage. However, even the high trigger voltage was lower than 200 volts, thus safe for your Fuji.
