Don't hit ctrl, f11 instead hit F8 and then go into Dell Factory Image Restore, that will wipe, format and reinstall all the factory software that's stored on the Recovery Drive (usually the D: drive) good luck.

Dont know why Dell doesnt keep consistent in their recovery option. This worked for me but you actually need to select Restore from the Windows menu (should be the first option) and then Dell Factory Image Restore after you log in.

Before you start the computer put the vista reinstallation disc in the drive, then power on the computer but when your at the dell screen press the f12 button once. Then down button until you get to cd/dvd drive. Then when is says boot from cd/dvd hit the space bar. Let the disc load, then as soon as it comes up hit install now. Select the partition and hit delete. After hit create. Then leave the value that comes up the same. After that click format. Then install. You may have to enter the product key code. Once thats done you may have to reinstall all of your drivers from www.dell.com/support

To use PC Restore for the Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop.......

1 Turn on the computer.

During the boot process, a blue bar with www.dell.com appears at the top of the screen.

2 Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press <Ctrl><F11>.

If you do not press <Ctrl><F11> in time, let the computer finish starting, and then restart the

computer again.

NOTICE: If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot in the following step.

3 On the next screen that appears, click Restore.

4 On the next screen, click Confirm.

The restore process takes approximately 6-10 minutes to complete.

5 When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer.

NOTE: Do not manually shut down the computer. Click Finish and let the computer completely reboot.

6 When prompted, click Yes.

The computer restarts. Because the computer is restored to its original operating state, the screens that

appear, such as the End User License Agreement, are the same ones that appeared the first time the

computer was turned on.

7 Click Next.

The System Restore screen appears and the computer restarts.
8 After the computer restarts, click OK.

Thank you for your help but all the answers, restore from the windows menu, boot from cd/dvd, restore have not worked. The only selection similar is directory services restore mode. Afer I hit any of the selections the only choice that comes up is to select operating system windows XP Pro.

No laptop is trashed when a password is lost. It just takes a little time to find out how to get into the system. I'll assume it is running XP Home that was originally installed on it from the specs I saw when researching. I'll also assume the password is not the one necessary to get into the BIOS CMOS setup- that one can normally be cleared by removing the CMOS battery and letting it set for a few hours or longer so the information is lost. The OS password can be cleared by making a bootable disk for that purpose. I have a Unix CD program that I made from information I downloaded from the Internet. You can do the same if you have access to a CD burner on another computer, say a friend's or one at work. I can get you the program's name if that's the route you want to take.

If the laptop hard drive has not been altered try this. An image of the system is created at the factory and stored on a hidden partition. To start the application, press when the blue bar with "www.dell.com" is displayed during the boot process. PC Restore only takes a few minutes to restore the operating system.

Restoring factory settings on Dell 1501

You can run a system repair with the recovery or operating system disc to get it back to the factory settings. A repair will reset the system, and leave any of your files, pics, and programs that you've put into the machine. If you want to clear everything, and go back to the factory settings, then reformat the hard drive and install a new operating system.
