I sucked up a piece of fabric about a month ago and now it won't **** up anything at all unless i used the tools or stay in one area for a long time. It sounds like maybe something happened to the motor...what can I do to fix this?

Re: doesn't have good suction
My guess is that the fabric that yoiu sucked up is stuck in your hose. Take the hose completely off of the machine and run something long (straightened out clothes hanger will work) through it to remove the clog.

I just had the same problem....suction from wand, but no suction from soleplate, the brush bar spins. Did all the troubleshooting steps on dyson.com but they didn't work...dyson.com says need to take to repairman, being a diyer I went to search engine.
I didn't find a fix, however I found one myself....it appears the vac can get stuck in floor mode or in between modes....the dial on top on dc07 ....selector of floor or carpet..try pushing it back and forth to see if that puts it in carpet mode...check for suction or try vacuuming...if that doesn't work, looking at vac from behind vac on the right hand side is the selector dial..on top of bottom portion of vac.....with vac in upright position, recline it as if about to vacuumn floor...look down at selector area ...you should be able to see a rectangular type button exposed ..push this to reset position...you may have to push it a few times...then try vacuumniing.....I finally had suction from soleplate!! Another tipoff to this problem is my selector dial would not stay in place would pop I to carpet by itself, but only halfway....fro a long time my vac would work but not very well...had to go over same area.4-5 times..What a workout! The first time I contacted dyson via tele the rep had me remove some stuff and I was able to look at area below selector...what I saw was two holes, one hole was only over the other hole half way...hence at that time I had only part suction since holes were not aligning properly....I read somewhere as a further tip to get suction to engage, while vac is reclined step on front edge of vac head it said you'll get more suction that way, I haven't tried that, but thought it may help someone
We've had our DC41 for 4 months now and suddenly noticed no suction at the base as well. Base motor works fine.Thought I'd take one last look before sending in for repair. At the base of the attachment hose near the motor is a small red tab. I depressed it and pulled the entire hose off the motor. Sure enough inside was a eyeliner pencil our daughter had unknowingly vacuumed up. I couldn't see it just peering the length of the hose. Even with a flashlight. You don't see mention of the small red tab but it allows you to see close up rather than peering down the hose if something is lodged near the motor. Apparently this pencil prevented the internal hardware to switch from wand to base suction when the handle is reclined in floor vacuum mode. These vacuums have strong suction and they will pull up the oddest things! Hope this helps!!
It sounds like the lint filter is clogged. It is located on the top clear plastic piece (the one with the dial to switch from floor to tool use) and is on the underside. It is a small (1 inch square) red plastic piece with a little door on it. Flip open the door and it is probably clogged with hair, carpet fibre, etc.. Clean it out and hopefully you will have suction again.
the suction channel is probably clogged.the suction channel goes right up the middle ,you can see it by looking through the cover.probably a lot of hair and dirt stuck up inside.there are some screws on the botton you need to take out then the cover will come off.seperate the 2 pieces of plastic and you will be able to clean the channel.please leave feedback
when mine does that I find that the hose is not connected properly where it comes off to use the attachments. If there is suction there, it is a straight shot to the floor unless it is loose where it fits together.
