Question about Kenmore 22422 Top Load Washer

1 Answer

Washer gets no power

I have an older Kenmore Elite top-load washer with an unknown model number. No place on this machine can I find a model number. It has quiet control and extra large capacity. There is a spin-type timer that when pulled out, starts the wash cycle. I had used the machine on Sunday with no problems, but yesterday, I spun the dial to ''permanent press'' cycle and pulled dial out to start the wash, and nothing. No noise, no pop, no water. Tried the breaker, thought I might have tripped it, but it was set just fine, power is going to the outlet. My husband removed the timer mechanism, Part # 3954810
but I don't even know if that is what controls the power to the machine. If I could find a model number, I know that would help, but I tried a couple of different numbers stamped on the machine, and inside the lid, but Sears didn't recognize either as a model number. I would appreciate any assistance with this problem. Thanks in advance.

The outlet has power, the dryer works fine in either one, and it seems that the "spin cycle" works too, it just won't start the was from the beginning for whatever reason. So possibly the timer? It's an expensive part, $104.00 from sears, so I'd hate to order it, just to find that doesn't fix it, ya know what I mean? It's like a third of the cost of a whole new machine. Thank you for your imput. I hope this is indeed the problem.

Ok, now the washer, after taking apart the timer and putting it back together, will fill and spin/drain, but won't agitate. Go friggin figure. It seems that the problem is morphing as the thing is taken apart and put back together. So worst case scenario, I can rinse and spin clothes to "freshen". LOL. It gets both hot and cold water, so It just seems that now it doesn't want to "wash".

Are you sure the outlet has power? make certain by plugging in a lamp or something else to the outlet first. the timer does have to get power to turn on the unit, but its not likely it is the problem.
try a different cycle and see if it wont run on any position. like fill, wash or spin. then if your outlet is ok, it could be the timer.
i dont think it is but it could happen. usually if the timer fails, it will work on some cycles but not all of them. if it wont work on any cycle then i would expect the outlet first.

ok so it sounds like we are dealing with a washer that just wont fill. and it wont agitate until the unit thinks its full of water.
now you should check to see if you can find the water level/pressure switch. it is what adjusts the amount of water in the unit. it has a clear plastic hose and 3 wires going to it, on the left side of control panel. take the hose off of it and lightly blow into the switch, you should be able to hear a click when enough pressure is forced into the switch and thats when the unit should agitate. now try it with the unit set to the fill cycle. if it does agitate, then go to checking the water valve.
make sure you do have the water turned onto the unit and that water valve screens are not plugged. not likely as you would get hot or cold but do check where the hose hooks up to the plastic valve, inside you will find the screens.
also make sure you check to see if it will fill with hot. and then try cold. you are trying to see if just one side of the water inlet valve is bad. usually both hot and cold wont fail at the same time.
if after these checks then you still dont get any water filling, then it also could have a water temperature control board. called an ATC, these very rarely fail, but im trying to get you to check everything else before you replace the timer.
it is possible the timer may have failed, but its not a normal type of failure for the timer, but anything can happen.
let me know what you find next and we will go from there.

lets go back to the possibility of a timer failure. when you had the timer apart, did you see any of the switching contacts that looked burnt or blown out? thats what usually will cause no power to let it agitate.
the other thing is the pressure switch, when the timer tells the unit to fill, it sends power to the p/switch and then fills until it"clicks" and lets power back to the motor. so did the p/switch stop the fill and then you hear nothing? if the p/switch does stop the water fill, then i would go back to the timer as the most likely cause.

Water won't pump out I have no spin cycle in kenmore top load washer

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Newer model Whirlpool / Kenmore washers use a Lid Switch as a safety device. Unless the switch senses that the lid on the washer is closed, the washer will neither agitate nor spin.

Older models only used the switch during the spin cycle.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

This is a Whirlpool PDF on how these washers operate. It has a diagram on jumping the switch as well as a detailed section on how the transmission works.$FILE/L-55.pdf

It also has a troubleshooting guide.

To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.

Following is a description of how to gain access to the console and how to remove the cabinet if necessary.

With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.

If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part and only requires you to access the console and remove the cabinet.

Where do I Find the model number on my Kenmore Elite Top load washer?

The model number on Kenmore top loaders is usually printed on a nameplate along the wash tub rim opening under the washer lid. The model number has 8 digits with a prefix of "110". If you cannot locate it, please let me know. I hope this helps you.
